Most California voters do not need to bring identification to vote in person. Check your polling-place address before you go; if you have a vote-by-mail ballot, bring it if you plan to vote in person. If your name is not on the voter list, ask a poll worker for a provisional ballot.

What should you bring to vote in person?

  • Your polling-place details: Check the location listed on the back of your county sample ballot booklet, use My Voter Status, or contact your county elections office.
  • Your vote-by-mail ballot, if you have it: Bring it if you want to exchange an unused ballot for an in-person ballot or return a completed, sealed ballot.
  • Identification only if it is required in your case: Most voters will not be asked for ID. You do not need to bring a purchased pen or other special voting accessory; the state guidance does not recommend one.

The California Secretary of State says, “In most cases, a California voter is not required to show identification to a polling place worker before casting a ballot.” See the state’s What to Bring to Your Polling Place page.

When might California require voter ID?

A narrow exception applies to some first-time voters in a federal election: those who registered by mail or online and did not provide the specified California driver license or ID number, or the last four digits of their Social Security number. The state says voters affected by this rule will be notified in advance; poll workers may ask for ID only when the voter list indicates it is required. Details are in the California Voter ID & Registration Requirements for the June 2, 2026 primary.

If the exception applies, the 2026 guide lists examples of acceptable documents, including a California driver license or state ID, U.S. passport, student or military ID, official government mail, a utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, or government check. The document may have a photo or not, need not show an address, and need not be government-issued. The examples are not the full authoritative list; consult the state’s polling-place guidance for more information.

Your polling-place address is printed on the back page of your county sample ballot booklet. You can also use My Voter Status to check voter status and find a polling place or vote center. If you cannot find the information, contact your county elections office or call the state voter hotline at (800) 345-VOTE (8683).

State guidance says polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. Check your county’s voter guide or elections office for details for the specific election and location. The Secretary of State’s Where and How to Vote page has statewide guidance.

What happens if your name is missing from the voter list?

Tell a poll worker and ask to cast a provisional ballot. It is a regular ballot placed in a special envelope. Election officials check whether you are registered in the county and have already voted in that election before counting it. You may cast a provisional ballot at a polling place in the county where you are registered; if you vote outside your assigned location, only eligible contests are counted. See the Secretary of State’s Provisional Voting guidance.

What if you requested a vote-by-mail ballot?

You can return a completed, sealed vote-by-mail ballot at a polling place, or surrender an unused ballot to exchange it for a polling-place ballot. If you do not bring the mail ballot, you can still ask to vote: a poll worker may provide a provisional ballot. Officials count it after confirming your registration and that you did not vote twice. The state explains the options in its guidance on voting at a polling place after applying to vote by mail.

What should you expect when you arrive?

There is no single check-in sequence or voting-machine model specified for every California county. Poll workers can give instructions on how to vote, including how to cast a provisional ballot. For local procedures and ballot-system details, consult your county voter guide; statewide voter rights are summarized in the Secretary of State’s Voter Bill of Rights.

What help is available if you need an accommodation?

The California Secretary of State’s June 2, 2026 primary guide says voters who need help marking a ballot may choose up to two people. They cannot be the voter’s employer or someone who works for the employer, or a labor-union leader or someone who works for the union. The guide also describes curbside voting, in which election officials bring the roster, ballot, and necessary materials to a voter at a curb or in a car, and accessible voting machines. Ask your county elections office about local arrangements. See the guide’s section on assistance for voters with disabilities.
