Medication may be considered as one part of a weight-control program when lifestyle changes have not been enough. Ask what treatment goal makes sense for you, and how your existing health conditions, other medicines, family history, and preferences affect the choice.

What side effects, warnings, and interactions should I ask about?
Ask: “What are the common side effects and serious warnings for this particular medicine, and what symptoms mean I should contact you?” Also ask whether it can interact with your prescriptions, OTC medicines, vitamins, supplements, or herbal products. Medicines in this category do not share identical risks, so get instructions for the exact product being considered.
Some safety details are product-specific. For example, the Wegovy FDA label revised March 2026 includes a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors and says to discontinue the medicine at least two months before a planned pregnancy when it is used for weight reduction. For OTC alli (orlistat), the FDA issued a June 10, 2026 safety communication about updated labeling warning of acute kidney injury and kidney stones; the communication describes symptoms that should prompt stopping the product and contacting a doctor. These examples are not risks to assume apply to every medication. Ask about the current labeling for your specific product.

How will treatment be monitored, and when will we reassess?
Ask: “What monitoring or lab tests do I need, how often, and when will we decide whether treatment is helping?” Agree on how progress will be assessed, what response is expected, and what symptoms should prompt a call before the next appointment.
As general guidance, NIDDK says clinicians may reassess when a patient has not lost at least 5% of starting weight after 12 weeks on the full dose. That is not a universal rule for every medicine or patient; ask how your clinician will apply response and timing to your treatment plan.

Monitoring can differ substantially by medicine. For example, Qsymia’s FDA labeling calls for pregnancy testing before initiation and monthly during therapy for patients who can become pregnant, along with laboratory monitoring. Ask what applies to your prescription rather than assuming another medicine has the same requirements.
How long will I need to take weight management medication?
Ask: “How long might I need to take this medicine, and what would make us continue, adjust, switch, or stop?” NIDDK says duration depends on whether the medicine helps and whether serious side effects occur; a clinician may recommend ongoing treatment when it is helping and tolerated. Agree on a follow-up point and what the next step will be if the medicine is ineffective or difficult to tolerate.
What should I ask about pregnancy, breastfeeding, or a compounded product?
Tell your clinician if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, could become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. NIDDK advises people who are pregnant or planning pregnancy not to take weight-management medicines and says they are not recommended while breastfeeding. Specific instructions differ by medicine, so ask about the product’s current label and timing before starting or changing treatment.
If a compounded GLP-1 medicine is proposed, ask who prescribed and dispensed the exact product, whether it is FDA-approved, and how the dose and administration instructions are verified. Compounded products are not FDA-approved products; the FDA has raised concerns about unapproved compounded GLP-1 drugs, including dosing and administration issues.
