The “VR cops” in this 2022 story were members of a VRChat roleplay community, not sworn officers. A group captain described making virtual evidence appear to come from another user, but the reported arrests were simulated: Futurism said no one was actually arrested or hurt by the roleplay.
Who were the “VR cops” in the story?
They belonged to the Loli Police Department (LPD), a police-themed roleplay community in the social VR platform VRChat. In a report published March 11, 2022, Futurism described members entering VRChat worlds, interacting with other users in character and sometimes staging arrests. Futurism said the group was founded in 2018 as a joke. Read Futurism’s report.
The name refers to “loli,” a term associated with underage or often sexualized female anime characters. Futurism’s account described members using those avatars. That is context for the report, not evidence that the group was a real police agency.
Did members really plant fake evidence?
One captain’s statement, as Futurism reproduced it from Input’s reporting, is the basis for the headline’s claim. Karet, identified as an LPD captain from Texas, described making a virtual bag of marijuana appear to come from another user’s pocket. That is an account of simulated evidence in roleplay—not a documented real-world evidence case or a claim that law-enforcement officers framed someone.

“I can pull out a bag of weed and make it look like it came out of someone’s pocket,” Karet told Input, according to Futurism. “They always say it’s not theirs.”
The quote supports a claim about what one captain said his character could do. It does not establish that every member planted virtual evidence, or that the group did so outside roleplay.

Were people actually arrested in the metaverse?
No legal arrests are described. Futurism explicitly said users were not actually arrested or hurt by members roleplaying as police. The article’s “arrests” refer to staged interactions inside VRChat, not arrests under criminal law.

Futurism, attributing the information to Input, reported that the LPD’s Discord had nearly 11,000 members at the time. That is an approximate figure from 2022, not a current membership count or a measure of how many people actively roleplayed.

Futurism also quoted another member describing hostile reactions, including people responding with profanity and references to police violence in the United States. That is the member’s account of their interactions, not an independently measured survey of VRChat users.

We get a lot more people responding and saying curse words to us, like ‘Fuck the police.’”

What the headline does—and does not—establish
- It establishes: Futurism reported on a VRChat police-roleplay group and reproduced a captain’s description of simulating planted evidence.
- It does not establish: that real officers were involved, that anyone was legally arrested, or that the group committed a real-world crime.
- Its time frame is historical: the report and its membership estimate date to March 2022; they do not verify the group’s present status.
Futurism attributed its account to Input’s reporting, including the quoted interviews. The linked Input story was titled “Inside the volunteer ‘police department’ arresting people in VR.”
