Both releases scheduled for Tuesday, 6 October 2026, showed weakness with important qualifications: German factory orders dropped 10.6% in August, but only 0.1% excluding large-scale orders; the UK construction PMI rose to 46.1, yet remained below the 50 mark that separates contraction from growth.

What did German factory orders show?

Germany’s price-adjusted manufacturing orders fell 10.6% month on month in August 2026, seasonally and calendar adjusted, according to provisional figures published by Destatis on 6 October. On a calendar-adjusted basis, orders were 2.7% higher than a year earlier. Destatis

The headline monthly decline needs context: excluding large-scale orders, August orders slipped just 0.1%. The three-month comparison was up 1.3% overall, but down 2.6% when large-scale orders were excluded.

July’s monthly increase was revised to 3.2%. Destatis said an exceptional volume of orders for ships, railway rolling stock and aircraft had contributed to the earlier surge; the release gives July’s revised year-on-year increase as 14.0%. The August fall therefore followed an unusually strong month and should not be read as a broad-based collapse in orders.

Did UK construction return to growth?

No. The September UK construction purchasing managers’ index (PMI) rose to 46.1 from 44.3 in August and beat the 45.0 forecast recorded by Investing.com. But 50 is the survey’s no-change threshold, so a reading below 50 still indicates that activity was contracting—more slowly than in August, rather than expanding. Reuters Investing.com

Reuters reported that the new-orders index fell to 45.9, a three-month low, from 47.7 in August. It described housebuilding as the weakest segment, followed by civil engineering, while commercial construction recorded only a small decline. These details are reported by Reuters rather than taken from a reviewed S&P Global release.

Reuters attributed this assessment to Tim Moore, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence: “Total new orders were relatively subdued in September as construction firms reported longer sales conversion cycles and clients deferred decision-making on major projects.”

What was on the calendar, and when?

A Sharecast preview published on Monday, 5 October 2026, at 14:34 said German factory orders for August and the September UK construction PMI were due the next day. Both releases were published on 6 October. Sharecast

The figures point to a sharp German headline reversal after July’s exceptional large-scale orders, and to a UK construction contraction that eased but persisted. A single monthly reading in either series is not enough to establish a lasting trend.
