The verifiable “Thoughts on Lanterns” meme is a 2026 joke built around a promotional image for DC’s Lanterns TV series: users redraw clothes onto the characters and adapt the image and caption to other franchises. But the title’s reference to an “iconic 20-year-old” DC meme remains unidentified in the available reporting. The newer meme should not be mistaken for proof of what that older reference means.
What is the “Thoughts on Lanterns” meme?
Know Your Meme describes an image macro based on a promotional image of John Stewart and Hal Jordan walking down a street. One version drew clothes onto the characters; later posts reused the format with other characters and captions that swapped in different franchise references. In practice, the joke is the recognizable image being repurposed, not a confirmed connection to a decades-old meme. Know Your Meme’s entry documents the format.

Does this explain the “iconic 20-year-old” DC meme?
No source in the available reporting identifies which older meme the title alludes to or shows how it connects to the 2026 “Thoughts on Lanterns” format. The phrase remains unresolved. It would be misleading to present the newly documented meme as the older one, or to claim that it explains the allusion.

That is a separate anecdote, not an identified meme. In a March 2026 report, ComicBook.com said Lanterns showrunner Damon Lindelof described a prior joke about dropping “Green” from the title as “a dumb joke on a comedy podcast” and recalled wearing a Hal Jordan T-shirt at his first Lost pilot Comic-Con panel in 2004. A separate ComicBook.com explainer reproduces the joke and Grant Morrison’s response. Neither report links that story to the “20-year-old meme” allusion. ComicBook.com’s report on Lindelof and its explainer on the title joke and Morrison’s response cover that separate context.
