The Google Pixel Watch 5 is a modest update to the Pixel Watch 4, not a redesign. It keeps the same 41mm and 45mm case sizes and familiar display, while adding a newer processor, 64GB of storage, revised GPS claims, and new health and safety features. For a Pixel Watch 4 owner who is happy with their watch, the upgrade case is weak; the new features may matter more to first-time buyers or people who will use them.
What is new on the Pixel Watch 5?
Google announced the Pixel Watch 5 on August 12, 2026, with general sales starting August 20. It runs Wear OS 7.0 and uses a Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated chip. Google lists 64GB of storage and says the watch has 50% more RAM, a 12% CPU boost, and is 20% faster than the previous generation. Those performance figures are Google’s comparisons, not independent benchmark results. Google’s launch announcement describes the updated dual-chip architecture and Gemini features.
Gemini and everyday interactions
Google highlights contextual suggestions, including calendar information, Raise to Talk, and one-handed gestures. It also says core actions can be processed offline. These software additions are intended to make the watch more useful without changing its basic look or operation.
GPS, workouts, and health tools
The watch adds an on-wrist strength-training experience, workout coaching, adaptive recovery suggestions based on sleep and heart-rate variability, and Health Guardian tools such as breathing emergency detection and health-trend tracking. Google says sleep-stage detection is 15% more accurate; it is a company claim, and the launch materials do not establish independent validation or a specific study population.

Google also says GPS route tracking is twice as accurate in the toughest environments. The company says that result came from an internal July 2026 study using pre-production Pixel Watch 5 devices, compared with Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro in sessions lasting three hours or less. It is not an independent benchmark. In its September 2026 review, TechRadar found GPS performance responsive during its reviewer’s use, which included runs and hikes, but that limited assessment does not validate Google’s broader comparison.
Feature availability varies by region, and some health functions require Google’s Google Health app or a Google Health Premium membership. Check which services are offered where you live before buying on the assumption that every announced feature will be available.

What stays familiar?
The Pixel Watch 5 retains the rounded, domed design and Actua 360 AMOLED display of its predecessor. Google’s US specifications list a 320ppi LTPO display with a 1–60Hz refresh rate, up to 3,000 nits peak brightness, and Gorilla Glass 5. Both sizes are 12.3mm thick; the 41mm watch weighs 31.0g and the 45mm weighs 36.7g, excluding the band. The housing is recycled aluminum.
Both sizes are rated 5ATM and IP68. Google lists Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, Ultra-Wideband, dual-frequency GPS, and LTE variants. Satellite SOS is included in the specifications, but service and safety-feature availability can depend on region. GPS satellite support also differs: Google’s US listing names GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS, while its rest-of-world listing additionally includes BeiDou and QZSS. Japan has FeliCa. Confirm local service and carrier support before choosing an LTE version.

Most phones running Android 12.0 or newer are compatible, but setup requires a Google Account and the Pixel Watch app. Google lists the watch, small and large Active Band sizes, Quick Charge Dock, and Quick Start Guide in the box. Its charger specification does not list a USB-C power adapter as included.
Pixel Watch 5 sizes, battery, and charging
The larger model has a materially bigger battery and longer official runtime estimate. Google’s figures are maximum estimates, not guaranteed results; actual battery life depends on settings and use.

All battery and charging figures in the table are Google’s specifications. TechRadar found battery life a weakness during its review despite the fast charging, so do not treat the advertised maximums as a promise of typical daily use.

Which size should you choose?
- Choose 41mm if you prefer a smaller case or have a narrower wrist, and can accept Google’s shorter runtime estimate.
- Choose 45mm if you want the larger watch and screen and value the longer stated battery estimate. It is both wider and heavier.
- Check your band choice: Google’s band compatibility varies by category and size. Verify compatibility for a sport or woven band before ordering.
Pixel Watch 5 vs. Pixel Watch 4: is the upgrade worthwhile?
The main differences are incremental performance and storage improvements, new software and health features, and Google’s revised GPS claims. The external design and size options remain familiar. The battery estimates differ between the two Pixel Watch 5 sizes, but Google’s published specifications do not provide directly comparable Pixel Watch 4 battery figures, so a numerical generational battery comparison would be misleading.

TechRadar’s September 2026 review praised GPS performance and repairability but criticized battery life and reliance on premium Google Health features. The reviewer reported around 10 days of use across gym workouts, runs, and hikes; that is one reviewer’s assessment over a limited period, not a representative battery-life test. Its listed device and subscription prices were review-time figures and may change.
Should you buy the Pixel Watch 5?
It makes sense if
- You are buying your first Pixel Watch and want the newer hardware and software platform.
- You value the announced coaching, sleep, or safety features and have confirmed they are available in your region.
- You want a 45mm option with a longer manufacturer runtime estimate than the 41mm model.
It is a less compelling upgrade if
- Your Pixel Watch 4 already meets your needs and you do not need the new health or safety tools.
- You are buying mainly for a new design, since the case sizes and overall appearance remain familiar.
- You do not want a paid membership for features that may sit behind Google Health Premium.
Price is time-sensitive. The Google Store US page showed a promotional price of $349.99, reduced from $399.99, when accessed October 7, 2026; that offer is not a durable launch price. TechRadar listed the 45mm model it reviewed at $429.99, £399.99, and AU$699 at review time. Compare the live price in your country and, for LTE, check carrier compatibility and any service costs before deciding.
