A socket fits over a fastener; a ratchet turns it; an extension adds straight reach; and an adapter connects tools and sockets with different square-drive sizes. A universal joint is a separate accessory for reaching a fastener at an angle. To choose the right pieces, match both ends of the connection: the socket opening to the fastener, and the socket’s drive to the ratchet or accessory.
How the pieces connect
A typical hand-tool setup runs from the handle toward the fastener: ratchet, then optionally an extension or adapter, then socket. The socket opening engages the fastener. The square drive is the connection between the socket and the other tools.
Drive size refers to the width of that square connection, commonly 1/4, 3/8, or 1/2 inch. Components must have compatible drives unless an adapter changes the connection size. An adapter does not change the socket opening, so it cannot make a socket that is the wrong size for a fastener fit correctly.

What each piece does
Socket: fits the fastener
The socket is the removable piece that goes over a nut or bolt head. Choose its opening to match the fastener, and check whether its measurement system is metric or SAE. A socket’s opening size and its square-drive size describe different things: one engages the fastener, the other connects to the tool.
#1 Best Overall
- Comprehensive Assortment: Includes 192 pieces—covering 1/4", 3/8 ratchet, and 1/2" drive ratchets, 1/4 socket set, 1/2 socket sets (SAE & metric), combination wrenches, extensions, adapters, hex keys, ratchet set metric wrench set, metric socket set, deep socket seta and accessories
- Ideal for mechanics, automotive, as a car tool kit and general maintenance tasks
- High-Quality Construction: Made from durable chrome vanadium steel for long life, corrosion resistance, and reliable heavy-duty performance. Mirror-polished chrome vanadium finish not only resists corrosion but also offers a professional look
- DirectTorque Technology: Sockets feature DirectTorque technology, which helps prevent rounding of fasteners and ensures optimal torque transfer
- 6-Point Socket Design: Provides better grip and reduces the risk of fastener rounding, especially compared to traditional 12-point sockets
Standard and deep sockets can serve different access needs. Check whether a set includes the type and sizes required for your work rather than choosing by piece count alone. CRAFTSMAN, for example, lists both a compact 20-piece 1/4-inch-drive set and a 728-piece metric-and-SAE set covering multiple drive sizes and tool types: 20-piece set and 728-piece set.
Ratchet: turns the socket with repeated strokes
The ratchet is the hand drive. Its mechanism turns the socket in one direction while allowing the handle to move back without having to lift the socket from the fastener after every stroke. This makes it useful where there is limited room to swing a handle continuously.

- Wide application: This socket wrench set is perfect for home improvement, carpentry tools, construction, auto repair, woodwork, and other DIY projects. This tool makes for a beautiful unique gift for men on various occasions like Father's Day, Birthday or anniversary.
Tooth count and swing arc are product specifications, not universal properties of every ratchet. CRAFTSMAN lists 72-tooth ratchets with a 5-degree arc swing in its cited 1/4-inch-drive set. Those figures describe that product; compare the specifications of the ratchet in the set you are considering. CRAFTSMAN 1/4-inch-drive set.

An extension fits between the drive tool and socket, moving the socket farther from the handle. It helps when a fastener sits down in a recess or beyond an obstruction. TEKTON describes an extension as a way to reach “past obstructions or into tight, narrow spaces” and lists extension lengths from 1 to 10 inches in one set. TEKTON 3/8-inch-drive extension set.

- PRECISION PERFORMANCE - Help prevent rounding of fasteners with sockets featuring DirectTorque Technology.
- MAXIMIZE COMFORT - Work comfortably on long days with a durable anti-slip vinyl grip bit driver.
- STRONG GRIP - Get a grip with a knurled ring that offers control in tough applications.
- WORK IN TIGHT SPACES 72-tooth count rachets provide a 5 degree arc swing for optimal control.
- AT-A-GLANCE IDENTIFICATION - Quickly find the right tool for the job with hand-stamped markings.
Choose a length that reaches the fastener while leaving room to position and operate the ratchet. An extension adds distance; it does not change the socket opening or the drive size.
Adapter: changes the drive connection
An adapter lets a tool with one square-drive size connect to a socket or accessory with another. For example, TEKTON describes using an adapter to connect a 1/4-inch-drive tool to 3/8-inch-drive sockets. TEKTON extension and accessory set.

- COMPLETE COVERAGE - This 50-piece impact socket set includes both SAE (5/16"-3/4") and metric (8-22mm) sizes in shallow and deep versions, plus ratchet handle, extension bars, and universal joint for comprehensive automotive service
- INDUSTRY-STRONG DURABILITY - Forged from heat-treated chrome vanadium steel with black phosphate coating, these 6-point sockets resist corrosion and wear while withstanding high-torque applications in demanding workshop environments
- PRECISION ENGINEERING - The 6-point socket design maximizes contact surface with fasteners, increasing locking force while preventing corner rounding and reducing wear during heavy-duty mechanical work
- QUICK IDENTIFICATION - Features laser-etched size markings that remain clearly visible in low-light conditions, enabling rapid tool selection and improving workflow efficiency during time-sensitive automotive repairs
- PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION - Comes in custom-molded storage with designated slots and printed size labels, ensuring secure tool arrangement and easy transport to job sites and mobile workshops
Use an adapter only to resolve a drive-size mismatch. It does not make a mismatched socket opening fit a fastener, and it does not add reach by itself. CRAFTSMAN’s 21-piece accessory drive set is one example of a kit with accessories spanning drive sizes. CRAFTSMAN accessory drive set.

A universal joint sits between the drive tool and socket and helps the socket approach a fastener at an angle, such as when a straight path is blocked. TEKTON describes its purpose as helping users “reach around obstructions and access fasteners at an angle.” It is distinct from an extension, which adds straight reach, and an adapter, which changes drive size. - Mechanic's 201-piece tool kit and socket set for tackling multiple sizes and types of fasteners, especially nuts and bolts
- Includes most popular 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch sockets, hex keys, and screwdriver bits; both Metric and SAE sizes included
- Chrome-vanadium steel forged body for torque, strength, and durability
- Full polished-chrome finish provides anti-corrosion protection
- Case provides convenient tool storage and portability
Choose pieces for the job
- Identify the fastener and socket opening. Determine the required socket size and whether you need metric, SAE, or both.
- Match the drive sizes. Check the ratchet, socket, and any extension or joint. If their square drives differ, use a compatible adapter; confirm that the socket opening still matches the fastener.
- Decide how you need to reach the fastener. Use an extension for more straight reach, or a universal joint when the socket needs to approach at an angle.
- Compare the set contents. Check the socket sizes and types, drive size, ratchet access specifications, extension lengths, and whether the needed adapter or universal joint is included.
A larger piece count is not automatically a better fit: the useful set is the one that includes the socket sizes, drive compatibility, and access accessories your tasks require. The cited manufacturer catalogs show options ranging from a single-drive compact set to larger sets spanning metric and SAE sockets and multiple drive sizes.
