The Hacker News reported on June 4, 2011, that Pakistan Cyber Army had accessed Acer Europe FTP resources and that an archive containing information on 40,000 users was present. The report described a possible access route involving FTP details shared in an Acer Europe ASP support forum hotfix post. Those are allegations in a historical report, not independently confirmed findings in the sources available here.
What The Hacker News said happened
The June 4, 2011 report said it was investigating an earlier reported incident involving Acer Europe. It alleged that Pakistan Cyber Army had hacked an Acer Europe server and compromised user data, source code, and a server. The report did not include an attributable statement from Acer, a regulator, an investigator, or a named technical expert.
The report’s headline blamed Acer’s “own stupidity,” but the reviewed material does not establish an independent finding about responsibility or a definitive cause. That wording is the report’s framing, not a substantiated adjudication of blame.

The Hacker News described an Acer Europe ASP support forum post about a hotfix release. According to the report, the post supplied FTP access to other forum members so they could download the hotfix. It dated the forum post to January 11, 2008, and said the attackers explored the FTP area.

This account suggests a potential access-boundary risk: an area made available to support users for file downloads could be unsafe if sensitive material were also accessible there. The report does not provide enough independently verified technical evidence to determine how Acer’s broader security controls worked or to establish a definitive root cause.
What was claimed about customer data
The report said a directory named “PB” contained a file called “Country Wise Customer Data.zip.” It described the archive as organizing customer data by country and said it contained information for 40,000 users. The figure and description should be understood as claims made by The Hacker News, not a confirmed count of affected people.
