Yes—but “living motherboard” describes a laboratory experiment, not a computer you can buy. Researchers at the University of the West of England’s Unconventional Computing Laboratory have used fungal mycelium wired to microelectrodes to study electrical signaling and simple computing-like behavior. The setup does not replace a PC’s processor, memory, or motherboard.
What the “living motherboard” actually is
Mycelium is the thread-like network that forms the body of a fungus. In the reported experiments, researchers connect microelectrodes to points in that network, applying stimulation at some locations and recording electrical activity at others. The mycelium acts as a biological network in which signals can be observed and investigated for computing-like functions. The Lab Reporter’s account and the related report describe a research setup, not a standard PC motherboard.
The work is associated with Andrew Adamatzky and the Unconventional Computing Laboratory at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). Feasibility studies reported there included oyster fungi (Pleurotus djamor), ghost fungi, bracket fungi, enoki, split-gill, and caterpillar fungi. The Lab Reporter lists these organisms in its coverage.

Electrical spikes as signals
Researchers record spikes of electrical activity from the mycelium. One basic way to interpret the signal is to treat a spike as 1 and its absence as 0. The timing and spacing of spikes may also carry information, which connects the work to unconventional and neuromorphic computing: approaches that explore information processing beyond conventional silicon circuits. Fisher Scientific’s Lab Reporter discusses the fungal signaling work.

Stimulation and memory-like behavior
Electrodes let researchers stimulate and monitor different points in the fungal network. Repeated stimulation can strengthen communication between points, producing behavior described as memory-like. That is an experimental observation, not evidence that a fungus has the same memory architecture or capabilities as computer RAM or storage. Reports describe investigation of simple logic-like experiments and memory-like effects, rather than a finished general-purpose computer. Can fungi replace a CPU, RAM, or PC motherboard?
Not on the evidence reported. The “motherboard” label is an analogy for a wetware prototype: the experiment does not provide a consumer-ready board, standardized PC interfaces, product specifications, or benchmarks showing that mycelium can compete with silicon hardware. Reports discuss potential roles analogous to processing, memory, or storage, but they do not establish that the setup can run ordinary software or serve as a drop-in PC component. Researchers and coverage point to possible future directions such as neuromorphic processing, fault tolerance, and self-regeneration. Those are prospects, not demonstrated consumer features. The cited reporting does not establish competitive speed, reliability, energy efficiency, scalability, manufacturing readiness, or commercial availability. It also provides no numeric head-to-head comparison with silicon or neuromorphic hardware.

No commercial fungal computer or motherboard is established by the cited reports. An oyster mushroom grow kit may help someone observe mycelium growth, and oyster fungi are among the species discussed in the experiments; it is not a computing component. The Lab Reporter and Fisher Scientific’s coverage identify oyster fungi in connection with the research.

What the experiments do—and do not—show
