The first law of thermodynamics says energy is conserved; the second says energy-conserving changes have a direction and limits. Together, they explain why an energy balance can be correct while a proposed engine or refrigerator still cannot work as imagined.
What the two laws explain
Thermodynamics studies energy, heat, work, and the states of physical systems. The first and second laws answer different questions: the first accounts for energy transfers, while the second constrains which changes can occur spontaneously and how much heat can be turned into useful work.

What the first law says about energy
The first law is energy conservation applied to a thermodynamic system. Energy cannot appear from nowhere: a system cannot deliver more energy than it receives unless energy already stored in it decreases.

Reading the energy equation
For a closed system, using the convention that heat added to the system is positive and work done by the system is positive, the first law is ΔU = Q − W. Here, ΔU is the change in internal energy, Q is heat added to the system, and W is work done by the system.

Some textbooks instead define work done on the system as positive. With that convention, the equation is written with a plus sign: ΔU = Q + W. The physical accounting is the same; the sign changes because the definition of positive work changes.
Heat and work describe energy crossing a system boundary. Internal energy, by contrast, is a property of the system. For an isolated system, no energy crosses the boundary, so its total energy remains constant.

What the first law does not decide
A balanced energy account does not prove that a proposed process can happen. The first law rules out energy from nowhere, but it does not by itself determine the direction of a change or whether a device can convert energy in a particular way.
What the second law says about direction and limits
The second law rules out some processes that would satisfy energy conservation but cannot occur as the sole effect of a cyclic device. It is commonly expressed through entropy, a state quantity that helps describe the direction of change.

Why heat engines cannot turn all heat into work
The Kelvin statement rules out a cyclic heat engine whose only effect is to absorb heat from one reservoir and convert all of it into net work. An engine can produce work from heat, but not by converting heat from a single reservoir completely into work with no other effect.
Why refrigerators need work
The Clausius statement rules out a cyclic refrigerator whose only effect is to transfer heat from a colder body to a hotter one without outside aid. Heat flows spontaneously from hotter objects toward colder ones; a refrigerator uses external work to move heat in the opposite direction.

How entropy expresses the law
For an isolated system, entropy remains constant during an ideal reversible process and increases during an irreversible one. Calling entropy simply “disorder” is an incomplete shortcut: it can obscure the law’s more precise role in describing allowed direction and irreversibility.
Why the laws matter in practical terms
- They expose impossible energy claims. A device cannot produce net energy from nowhere; its energy output must be accounted for by incoming energy or a decrease in stored energy.
- They distinguish accounting from feasibility. A proposal may balance its energy inputs and outputs yet still violate the second law’s limits on direction or conversion.
- They explain real-world energy conversion limits. Engineers use both laws to reason about how energy is transferred and how much of it can be put to useful work in engines, refrigerators, and other systems.
Keep the distinction straight
When checking a claim about a thermodynamic device, ask two separate questions: first, where does every unit of energy come from or go; second, does the proposed direction and conversion obey the second law? The first question is about conservation. The second is about possibility.
