In February 2017, Intel, Microsoft, J.P. Morgan, Accenture and other companies joined the launch of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (EEA), a collaboration to develop shared standards and a reference architecture for enterprise Ethereum applications. They were not announcing one new blockchain for every member: the EEA’s stated scope included applications on both public Ethereum and private, permissioned Ethereum networks.
What happened in 2017?
The EEA announced its launch on February 28, 2017. Its plan was to coordinate standards work and open-source collaboration around Ethereum technology for organizations. IEEE Spectrum reported that more than 30 companies had joined by the formal launch, naming Intel, Microsoft, J.P. Morgan and Accenture among them. That figure describes the 2017 launch period; it is not a current membership count. IEEE Spectrum’s contemporaneous report covered the corporate initiative, while the EEA launch announcement set out the alliance’s aims.
Did the companies build a separate Ethereum blockchain?
No single, shared “enterprise Ethereum” chain was the central announcement. The EEA described “EntEth 1.0” as a reference architecture: a framework for organizations building applications using Ethereum-related technology. Its stated scope covered public, permissionless Ethereum as well as private, permissioned Ethereum networks. A specific organization or consortium could choose a network arrangement suited to its application; the alliance’s standards effort did not require every participant to run the same chain.
What does “enterprise Ethereum” mean?
In this context, the phrase brings together three related but distinct ideas:
#1 Best Overall
- Shared standards: common guidance intended to help organizations develop compatible Ethereum-based systems.
- Enterprise applications: software and services used by organizations, which may be built on Ethereum-related infrastructure.
- Network choice: an application may use public Ethereum or a restricted, permissioned network, depending on its needs.
The 2017 announcement described a framework intended to support both public and private application settings. It did not claim that all enterprise uses would have identical governance, privacy controls or technical architecture.
Why did businesses want an enterprise-focused effort?
The alliance’s launch materials and contemporaneous coverage pointed to concerns organizations commonly evaluate when considering shared infrastructure: security, privacy, confidentiality, scalability and interoperability. Standards and collaboration were meant to help address those needs across organizations, rather than make the effort simply one company’s proprietary blockchain product.
Rank #2
These requirements can pull in different directions. Public networks provide a shared environment, while a permissioned deployment restricts participation and may be designed around a consortium’s governance and confidentiality needs. The EEA’s launch announcement established that both settings were in scope; it did not provide a universal performance comparison or declare one approach best for every business.

The EEA describes itself as a member-led nonprofit focused on institutional and enterprise Ethereum, with standards, intelligence and collaboration among its activities. It says it was founded in 2017. Its About page provides its current organizational description.
Rank #3
The alliance’s insights archive shows continued work on topics including institutional Ethereum, privacy, infrastructure, tokenization and adoption. The archive lists a privacy working-group announcement in February 2026 and a privacy report in May 2026. Those materials show privacy remains an active topic; they do not establish one solution as standard across enterprise deployments.
A separate current perspective comes from the Ethereum Foundation. Its primer for governments and institutions, published July 1, 2026, frames Ethereum as public programmable infrastructure and discusses institutional deployment choices. It offers present-day context, not evidence of what the EEA had completed at its 2017 launch.
