The Apple TV app is Apple’s video app for finding and watching Apple Originals, sports and other programming, plus movies and shows available to rent or buy. It can also connect to selected streaming services, depending on your device and region. The app is not the same as an Apple TV subscription or an Apple TV 4K streaming box—and you do not need Apple hardware to use it.
What is the Apple TV app?
It is a video-viewing and discovery app that brings several kinds of content together. Depending on the device and region, you can use it to watch Apple Originals, access sports offered through Apple, find selected channels, browse movies and shows to rent or buy, and view items in your library. The app may also surface recommendations and connect with other streaming apps.
Apple describes the app as a place to buy, rent and watch content, including items previously purchased from iTunes. Features and available content vary by platform and location. Apple’s Apple TV app overview and its Apple TV app at a glance guide describe the available services and functions.

No. Apple uses similar names for three different things:

- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
- Apple TV app: The software you open on a supported phone, computer, television or streaming device.
- Apple TV subscription: A paid subscription for Apple’s subscription content, with offerings that depend on the country or region.
- Apple TV 4K: Apple’s physical streaming box, which can run the app. It is one way to access the app, not a requirement.
Seeing “Apple TV” in a device menu or on a screen does not by itself mean you have a subscription. The app, subscription and streaming box are separate.
Is everything in the app included with an Apple TV subscription?
No. The app can display several kinds of viewing options, and they do not all come with one subscription. Apple says an Apple TV subscription does not include third-party branded subscription services or content available to rent or buy in the app. Those may require a separate subscription, rental or purchase. What you can watch also depends on your region and device. Sports, channels and other features are not necessarily available everywhere or on every platform.
Do you need an Apple TV device to use the app?
No. Apple lists the app for its own products as well as compatible Android devices, PCs, smart TVs, streaming devices and game consoles. The supported lineup and availability vary by region. Check Apple’s Apple TV app page or the app store for your device to confirm compatibility.

On a compatible smart TV or streaming device, the usual setup is to find and install the Apple TV app from that device’s app store, then sign in with your Apple Account. Apple provides platform guidance in Get the Apple TV app on your smart TV or streaming device.
Can you subscribe, rent or buy directly in the app?
Not always. Some smart TVs and streaming devices do not support transactions inside the app, so you may be unable to subscribe, rent or buy directly on that screen. Apple says you can complete the transaction on another supported device and then watch on the TV. Whether the app supports on-device transactions depends on the platform. Apple also says playback can continue across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. A purchase or subscription may therefore be available to watch on a supported TV even if you had to arrange it elsewhere.

How to tell what you need
- You only want to use the app: Check whether it is available for your TV, phone, computer or streaming device. You do not need Apple TV 4K if you already have a compatible device.
- You want Apple’s subscription programming: Check the subscription terms and regional availability; the app itself does not mean the programming is included.
- You want a particular movie, show, channel or sport: Check whether it is part of a subscription, requires a separate channel subscription, or is offered for rental or purchase in your region.
- You cannot find a way to pay on your TV: The device may not support in-app transactions. Use another supported device to complete the purchase or subscription, then return to the app on your TV.
Bottom line: the app is a hub, not a box or an all-inclusive subscription
The Apple TV app is software for discovering and watching video. It can bring Apple content and other viewing options together, but what it offers—and what you can buy or subscribe to from within it—depends on your region and device. Apple TV 4K is optional hardware, and an Apple TV subscription is a separate service.
