Apple Music for Windows is Apple’s dedicated app for listening to and managing music on a Windows PC. It brings together an Apple Music subscription library, a personal music library and iTunes Store purchases. Apple distributes it through the Microsoft Store.
What you can do with Apple Music for Windows
The app is more than a music-streaming player. Apple’s Windows user guide describes tools for managing a music library, searching for music, creating playlists, viewing lyrics and listening to radio. You can also access your music library across devices. Lyrics can be added to songs that do not already have them.

A new installation starts with an empty library. You can build it with Apple Music content, iTunes Store purchases and music from other sources. Apple describes the catalog as containing “millions of songs,” but does not provide a dated count in its guide.
How it differs from iTunes and Apple’s other Windows apps
Apple’s Windows apps divide media and device management among separate applications. Apple Music is for listening to and managing music, including music in an iTunes library and iTunes Store purchases. The Apple TV app is for watching and managing movies and TV shows. Apple Devices handles tasks such as managing, updating, backing up, restoring and syncing Apple devices. Apple’s Windows app download page explains the roles of these apps and points users to the Microsoft Store.

You do not need special audio hardware for ordinary listening. Apple says a Windows PC can play through built-in speakers or wired headphones, receivers or powered speakers. For sample rates above 48 kHz, an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC) may be needed, depending on the PC. Apple recommends checking with the computer manufacturer. Its lossless audio guidance explains the PC playback considerations.
| Listening goal | What to know |
|---|---|
| Listen through built-in speakers or wired audio equipment | Apple lists built-in speakers, wired headphones, receivers and powered speakers as playback options; a DAC is not a general app requirement. |
| Listen at sample rates above 48 kHz | An external DAC may be needed, depending on the PC. Check with its manufacturer. |
| Use Lossless or Dolby Atmos | Availability varies by country or region; Lossless and specified quality controls require an Apple Music subscription. |
Where to get the app
Download Apple Music from the Microsoft Store. Apple also directs Windows users to the Store to check for updates. Store availability and app features may vary by country or region.
