The Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor measures temperature, humidity, particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and carbon monoxide (CO). The Alexa app turns the sensor data into an indoor air-quality score and trends, and Alexa can notify you when air quality becomes poor. The score is Amazon’s summary of this monitor’s readings—not a universal air-quality index. Most importantly, the device is not a certified carbon monoxide alarm and cannot replace one.
What the monitor measures
Amazon lists five factors. The names tell you the general category being monitored, but the cited product guidance does not specify every measurement detail.
| Reading | What Amazon says it indicates | What the cited guidance does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | How temperature varies in the home. | A recommended temperature range or accuracy specification. |
| Humidity | Moisture levels. Readings can be affected by conditions around the sensor, so placement matters. | An accuracy specification or a universal interpretation scale. |
| Particulate matter (PM) | Potential allergens and irritants. | A particle-size fraction such as PM2.5 or PM10. The cited Amazon guidance does not identify one. |
| Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) | Potential unwanted chemicals. | Specific compounds or a species-specific concentration. The category label does not mean the monitor identifies an individual chemical. |
| Carbon monoxide (CO) | A monitored factor shown by the device. | Certified CO alarm or detector performance. This is not a life-safety device. |
Amazon’s factor list identifies carbon monoxide (CO), not carbon dioxide (CO₂). Do not treat the two gases as interchangeable.

The Alexa app presents the sensor data as an indoor air-quality score and shows trends over time. It may also offer general tips, and Alexa can notify you in the app or through a compatible Echo when air quality becomes poor. Amazon’s cited help guidance does not publish the score’s formula or numerical cutoffs, so the score should be understood as a summary of this device’s readings—not as a universal AQI, a diagnosis, or a direct measure of personal exposure.
#1 Best Overall
- Know your air – An Alexa air quality monitor that makes it easy to understand what’s in your indoor air.
- Track and measure – Our indoor air quality monitor keeps tabs on 5 key factors: particulate matter (PM 2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), humidity, and temperature.
- Stay informed – Get an indication of current indoor air quality from the color-coded LED, and detailed information and an easy-to-understand air quality score in the Alexa app.
- Real-time alerts - Get notifications on your phone or announcements on Echo devices when Alexa detects poor indoor air quality.
- Automate climate control - Enable Routines to turn on or off your compatible Alexa devices, such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and fans, when the indoor air quality sensors detect changes.
Amazon’s announcement gives opening a window, using a fan, or turning on an air purifier or humidifier as examples of possible responses. These are suggestions, not guarantees: the right action depends on the pollutant and circumstances.
How to place and calibrate the monitor
Placement affects the air conditions the sensor encounters. Amazon recommends an open area smaller than 500 square feet for optimal readings.

- Keep the air intake unobstructed.
- Avoid direct sunlight and nearby heating or cooling vents.
Initial calibration takes seven minutes, and Amazon says the device may take up to two days to adjust to its surroundings. Unplugging it starts the seven-minute calibration again.
Do not rely on it as a carbon monoxide alarm
Amazon explicitly says the monitor is not a certified CO alarm or detector, is not a substitute for one, and should not be used to detect or alarm to harmful CO levels. Use a dedicated, compliant carbon monoxide alarm for CO protection. Treat the monitor’s CO reading as a feature of its air-quality monitoring, not as a life-safety warning.

What the product information does—and does not—confirm
Amazon’s product guidance describes broad sensor categories and how Alexa presents readings; it does not provide accuracy specifications, a numerical score formula, a PM size fraction, or VOC species. CARB’s low-cost sensor report and guidance list the Amazon monitor among devices under consideration, but that reference is not evidence of independent certification or validation of this particular monitor.
Amazon’s November 3, 2021 announcement attributes to the EPA the estimates that people spend approximately 90% of their time indoors and that some air pollutants may be two to five times worse indoors than outdoors. Those figures are attributed by Amazon to EPA; they are not measurements from this monitor.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- 【Professional 10-in-1 Air Quality Monitor】This professional 10-in-1 air quality monitor accurately measures carbon dioxide (CO2), formaldehyde (HCHO), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), temperature, humidity, AQI, PM2.5, PM1.0, PM10 in real time, and features a clock (Connect your phone to the monitor via Bluetooth: MT13S, and it will automatically calibrate the time). It helps you keep track of your indoor air quality at a glance, making it ideal for home use.
