The “AI-mazing” Pixel 8a reveal was leak coverage from April and May 2024, not a new Google announcement. Android Authority reported that a purported spec sheet pointed to Tensor G3, a 120 Hz display, 8 GB of RAM and several storage and camera options. Google later published the phone’s official specifications and announced additional AI features, including Gemini Nano access as a developer option.
What did the Pixel 8a leak reveal?
On May 4, 2024, Android Authority reported on a purported translated specification document circulated by X user @MysteryLupin. The reported leak claimed the Pixel 8a would have a 6.1-inch, 120 Hz display, Google’s Tensor G3 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB or 256 GB of storage. It also listed 64 MP main and 13 MP ultrawide rear cameras, plus a 13 MP front camera.
Those details were leak claims at the time, not a Google confirmation. The same report gave a European starting price of €549; that figure should be understood as part of the reported leak, not as an official or current price.

Google’s Pixel 8a (2024) specification page lists a 6.1-inch Actua OLED display with 1080 × 2400 resolution and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, Tensor G3, 8 GB LPDDR5x RAM, and 128 GB or 256 GB UFS 3.1 storage. Google also lists Qi-certified wireless charging. Storage availability varies by region and sales channel.

For the listed display, processor, memory and storage, Google’s final specifications broadly aligned with the leaked claims. The official specifications page is the appropriate reference for the phone’s published hardware details.
Why was the phone described as “AI-mazing”?
On April 30, 2024, Android Headlines reported that leaked promotional material used the phrase “AI-mazing” and highlighted features including Audio Magic Eraser, Night Sight and Best Take. The phrase was marketing language in the reported material, not an independent assessment of the phone. The outlet also noted that some of the named features were already available on earlier Pixel models.

Gemini Nano was a separate, later development—not something established by that pre-release marketing leak. In a June 11, 2024 Pixel feature announcement, Google said Gemini Nano could be accessed on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a as a developer option. Google Product Marketing Manager Mikaela Kraft described it as “Google’s most efficient AI model built for on-device tasks.” The same announcement covered on-device Recorder summaries with speaker detection and USB-C display output for Pixel 8a.

Google announced the Pixel 8a on May 7, 2024. Contemporaneous launch-day reporting from 9to5Google put the US starting price at $499 and reported availability beginning May 14, 2024. These are dated US launch details, not a statement of today’s price or stock.

What the leak story does—and does not—establish
- The April–May 2024 “AI-mazing” coverage concerned leaked promotional and specification material; attribute those early claims to the outlets and the reported source.
- Google later published the Pixel 8a’s hardware specifications and separately announced Gemini Nano as a developer option, along with Recorder and display-output features.
