The “3.5 GHz band” is a context-dependent name for radio spectrum around 3.5 gigahertz (GHz), not one worldwide block with identical boundaries. In 5G equipment specifications, the frequency falls within 3GPP bands n77 and n78; in the United States, the named Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) occupies 3550–3700 MHz. To know which frequencies or rules someone means, identify the country and whether the reference is to a device band, a service, or a regulatory allocation.

What frequencies does the 3.5 GHz band cover?

There is no single universal lower and upper boundary for the phrase. “3.5 GHz” is often shorthand for spectrum near 3.5 GHz, while standards and regulators define specific ranges for particular purposes.

For 5G New Radio, the 3GPP operating bands n77 and n78 both include 3.5 GHz, but neither is an exact synonym for the informal phrase:

Label Frequency range What the label describes
3GPP NR n77 3300–4200 MHz A standardized 5G operating band. The FCC attributes this range to 3GPP TS 38.104. FCC, 2021
3GPP NR n78 3300–3800 MHz A separate standardized 5G operating band that overlaps n77. FCC, 2021
U.S. CBRS 3550–3700 MHz A U.S. service and sharing framework, not the full n77 or n78 range. NIST

These boundaries answer different questions: n77 and n78 are technical operating-band designations; CBRS is a U.S. service with defined access rules. A frequency can lie within a 5G operating band without being part of a particular national service allocation.

What does “3.5 GHz” mean in the United States?

In the United States, CBRS refers to 3550–3700 MHz. The National Institute of Standards and Technology describes CBRS as using a three-tier sharing architecture, and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration describes the spectrum as shared federal and non-federal use. The NTIA says the CBRS framework was established in 2015. NIST: Citizens Broadband Radio Service · NTIA: 3550–3650 MHz band report

The NTIA report’s title refers to 3550–3650 MHz, whereas NIST gives the broader CBRS range as 3550–3700 MHz. These references should not be collapsed into one boundary: the report title identifies a particular 100 MHz segment, while the NIST page describes the broader CBRS range.

How is the 3.5 GHz label different from 3.45 GHz or 3.7 GHz?

Regulatory references may distinguish 3.45 GHz, 3.5 GHz, and 3.7 GHz spectrum as neighboring segments. The FCC’s 2021 order discusses these labels separately while noting that 5G bands n77 and n78 overlap portions of the wider spectrum. So a device band’s broad frequency range does not make every separately named regulatory segment the same allocation. FCC 21-32

How to interpret the term precisely

When a specification, coverage map, or policy document mentions “3.5 GHz,” check what kind of boundary it is giving:

  • Device or network compatibility: look for the exact 3GPP band, such as n77 or n78. The band label alone does not establish whether a particular phone or router supports the frequencies in a given market; compatibility can depend on model, market, and software.
  • Service availability or access rules: identify the named service and country. In the United States, CBRS is 3550–3700 MHz and uses a three-tier sharing framework.
  • Regulatory allocation: consult the regulator’s specific frequency boundaries. A nearby label such as 3.45 GHz or 3.7 GHz may refer to a separately discussed segment.

For a precise answer, state the jurisdiction and context alongside the frequency range—for example, “U.S. CBRS, 3550–3700 MHz” or “5G NR band n78, 3300–3800 MHz.”

5G LTE Antenna, 600-6000MHz SMA Male for Cellular Routers, 2-Pack
  • CELLULAR REPLACEMENT ANTENNA — Designed for compatible 4G LTE and 5G cellular routers, IoT gateways and cellular trail cameras that use a standard SMA female antenna port. This is a passive antenna, not a signal booster.
  • STANDARD SMA MALE CONNECTOR — Features an SMA male plug with a center pin. It is not RP-SMA and will not fit devices with a different connector. Check the connector photo and your device manual before ordering.
  • FOLDABLE, POSITIONABLE DESIGN — The hinged antenna can be positioned for compact desktop, enclosure or field installations. Repositioning the antenna may help reduce obstruction, but results depend on local network coverage and placement.
  • TWO-ANTENNA PACK — Includes two matching antennas for replacing two compatible antenna ports or keeping one as a spare. A two-pack does not add MIMO capability to a device that was not designed for MIMO.
  • VERIFY BEFORE PURCHASE — Confirm the device frequency range, standard SMA connector and available clearance. Antenna performance varies with frequency band, cable loss, enclosure, mounting position, terrain and distance from the cellular tower.
