The October 2024 leak suggested that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D scored near their non-X3D Ryzen 9000 counterparts in Cinebench R23 single-core testing. It did not establish that Ryzen 9000X3D performance overall—or gaming performance—was close to Zen 4. Tom’s Hardware attributed the figures to leaker CodeCommando, and said the test systems and conditions were unknown.
What the leak reported
Tom’s Hardware reported approximate Cinebench R23 results attributed to CodeCommando. The X3D figures were leaks, not scores the publication said it had independently verified. The comparison figures for other processors came from the publication’s comparison table; the CPUs were not established as having been tested together under identical conditions.

In the single-core column, the alleged 9800X3D score is near the listed 9700X result, while the 9950X3D figure is near the 9950X and 9900X results. The multi-core figures tell a less uniform story: the 9800X3D leak is above the listed 9700X result, and the 9950X3D leak is close to the listed 9950X result. Because the test setups are unknown and the values come from different evidence categories, these comparisons are illustrative rather than a controlled ranking. Tom’s Hardware’s October 5, 2024 report explicitly cautioned that the leaked systems’ specifications and testing environment were not known.

Cinebench R23 is a synthetic CPU benchmark. Its single-core score reflects one type of workload, and its multi-core score reflects another. The leak’s near-parity in some single-core comparisons cannot establish that the processors have similar performance across applications, nor does it measure gaming performance. The comparison table includes Zen 4 X3D parts, including the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Ryzen 9 7900X3D, but that alone does not turn the results into a controlled generational comparison.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
For gaming, the relevant evidence is separate. When AMD announced the 9800X3D on October 31, 2024, it claimed an average 8% gaming improvement versus the prior generation based on AMD’s own performance testing. That vendor claim addresses games, not the leaked Cinebench scores, and should not be treated as independent confirmation of the leak. AMD’s announcement also characterized Ryzen 9000 as delivering an approximately 16% generational single-thread IPC uplift; IPC is an architecture-level claim, not a guaranteed uplift in every program or benchmark. AMD’s 2024 announcement provides the product details and its stated gaming result.
How the 9800X3D fits into Ryzen generations
The 9800X3D is a Zen 5 desktop processor, not a Zen 4 model. AMD specifies 8 cores, 16 threads, second-generation 3D V-Cache, 104 MB total cache, and a 120 W TDP. Its announced launch price was $479; that was the historical launch price, not a statement of current retail pricing.

- Max. Boost Clock : Up to 5.7 GHz; Base Clock: 4.3 GHz
- Form Factor: Desktops , Boxed Processor
- Architecture: Zen 5; Former Codename: Granite Ridge AM5
For comparison, AMD’s 2023 announcement identified the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Ryzen 9 7900X3D, and Ryzen 9 7950X3D as Zen 4 X3D processors. Their published configurations were respectively 8 cores and 104 MB total cache, 12 cores and 140 MB, and 16 cores and 144 MB. These specifications describe different products; they do not validate the leaked benchmark comparison. AMD’s Ryzen 7000X3D announcement lists those Zen 4 models.

The leak was reported in October 2024, before AMD officially announced the 9800X3D later that month. It should be read as a historical leak story, not as current confirmation of the Ryzen 9000X3D lineup’s standing. AMD announced the Ryzen 7 9850X3D at CES 2026, describing it as an 8-core/16-thread Zen 5 processor with up to 5.6 GHz boost, 104 MB total cache, and 120 W TDP, with availability beginning in Q1 2026. AMD called it the newest and fastest gaming processor in the Ryzen 9000X3D line in that announcement. AMD’s CES 2026 release is the source for those later product statements.

AMD’s current desktop processor page also describes flagship Ryzen 9000X3D models with up to 208 MB on-chip memory. That family-level figure should not be confused with the 104 MB total-cache specification AMD gives for the 9800X3D and 9850X3D. AMD’s Ryzen desktop processor page presents its broader current family information.
