The AWS–UK government deal was a reported three-year memorandum of understanding called the One Government Value Agreement (OGVA). Announced in November 2020, it aimed to give public-sector organisations access to AWS services on shared terms, with training and supplier access among its stated benefits. It is a historical announcement, not evidence of a current 2026 agreement: the available reporting does not establish whether the OGVA was renewed or remains active.
What was the AWS UK government cloud deal?
The Crown Commercial Service (CCS) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) were reported to have agreed the OGVA, treating UK government and public-sector organisations as one AWS customer. The stated goal was to make AWS public-cloud services available on terms intended to deliver savings compared with each organisation negotiating separately. IT Pro’s 2 November 2020 report and Computer Weekly’s 3 November 2020 report describe the intended benefits, but neither provides the full agreement or a detailed discount schedule. The reports therefore do not establish a specific saving or prove that savings were achieved.
The agreement was described as three years. A later, separate three-year Microsoft agreement was reported in 2021; that chronology explains why “latest” appeared in the 2020 headline, but does not establish a current ranking of cloud deals. IT Pro’s 21 April 2021 report also refers to earlier UKCloud and Google Cloud arrangements.
What did the OGVA offer?
Coverage described two broad tiers based on an organisation’s stage of cloud adoption. It did not publish detailed eligibility conditions, prices, or contractual obligations.
#1 Best Overall
| Organisation profile | Reported support |
|---|---|
| Beginning cloud adoption | Bespoke training, workshops, and AWS cloud credits for research projects. |
| Already using cloud at larger scale | Additional services and advantageous pricing structures intended to build on existing cloud use. |
The announcement coverage also said AWS would create a digital-skills fund intended to train 6,000 civil servants in cloud skills at no additional cost to government. That figure was a target reported in 2020, not a verified count of people who completed training.
How could smaller suppliers take part?
Public-sector buyers were reported to be able to procure AWS services either directly from AWS or through members of the AWS Partner Network. The arrangement was presented as a way to give smaller suppliers more access to public-sector opportunities. That describes the intended procurement route; it is not evidence that the agreement produced a particular number or value of supplier contracts.
Rank #2
Computer Weekly attributed additional figures to AWS: through G-Cloud, more than 150 companies had used AWS to provide more than £1.3 billion of their own services to government, and more than half of those companies were classed as SMEs. These were AWS-reported figures in 2020, not independently audited outcomes established by the article.
What is known about the agreement’s results and current status?
The 2020 reports explain the agreement’s aims and describe its intended support, but do not supply a discount schedule, the complete contract, or independently verified savings and training outcomes. The reporting reviewed here also does not establish whether the original three-year OGVA was renewed or remains in force. Treat any present-day claim about its terms or active status as unverified unless supported by newer, authoritative information.
Rank #3
CCS chief executive Simon Tse said the agreement demonstrated “excellent value” and supported public bodies’ efforts to improve services for citizens. AWS UK public-sector director Chris Hayman said it would boost skills, widen smaller suppliers’ access, and deliver savings. These are statements from the organisations involved describing expected benefits, not independent confirmation that those results occurred.
