Steam’s review percentage is the share of reviews that count toward the score and recommend a game—not a complete measure of its quality. Steam displays separate scores for the past 30 days and the product’s lifetime. Use those figures as starting points, then read reviews to learn what players liked or disliked and whether their reasons matter to you.
What the Steam review percentage measures
Steam calculates a review score from positive and negative reviews. In practical terms, the percentage tells you what share of counted reviews recommend the product. Valve describes the score as an overview of customer reviews “in the last 30 days and over its lifetime” in its Steamworks User Reviews documentation.

It is not a critic score, star rating, or direct measurement of technical quality. A review can reflect performance, content, value, business practices, or the community experience. The percentage alone does not tell you which of those factors drove a recommendation.

Steam’s documentation does not specify a minimum review count needed to trust a score or publish a confidence interval. Avoid treating any particular review-count threshold as an official Steam rule.

Why visible reviews may not match the score
A review can be readable on a store page without counting toward its percentage. Steam allows reviews from people who accessed a product in different ways, including through a key, a Free Weekend, a free game, or Family Library Sharing. But only purchases made on Steam by the reviewing account count toward the score, according to Steam’s review documentation.
This difference matters when comparing the displayed score with the reviews you can browse: the visible set is not necessarily the same set used to calculate the percentage.

How to interpret recent and lifetime scores
The recent score summarizes counted recommendations from the past 30 days; the lifetime score reflects the product’s longer history. Compare like with like: recent against recent, and lifetime against lifetime.

If the two figures differ, treat that as a reason to investigate rather than an explanation in itself. Read dated reviews and check relevant product updates before connecting a sentiment shift to a patch, launch, controversy, or other event. Steam’s review data includes creation and update timestamps, which can help put comments in context.

The reviews shown most prominently on a store page are another distinct signal. Steam says it selects prominently displayed reviews from recently written, helpful reviews. That selection can surface useful accounts of the current experience, but it is not a chronological census or the full set behind the score.
How to judge individual reviews
Look for specific, recurring comments that relate to what you care about—such as performance, controls, accessibility, multiplayer, monetization, content, or support. A single account can describe a real experience, but it cannot establish a general pattern on its own.

- Date: Check when the review was written and whether it was later updated. A comment about an earlier version may not describe the game now.
- Playtime: Consider how long the reviewer had played when writing. A brief session and an extended playthrough can reveal different things.
- Purchase and access context: Steam exposes purchase status and whether a copy was received for free, among other review details.
- Language and Early Access: These can help explain a review’s context, especially if the game or its audience varies by region or the review describes an unfinished version.
- Helpful votes: They help explain why a review is prominent, but do not guarantee that its experience or priorities represent yours.
Steam’s review API includes fields for review text, language, timestamps, recommendation direction, helpful and funny votes, playtime at review, purchase status, free-copy disclosure, Early Access status, refund status, and developer responses. These details can help you assess context; none automatically makes a review more or less valid.
What Steam’s review-bomb policy means
Steam describes a review bomb as a large group of players using reviews to express unhappiness, lower a score, and provoke a response. Its review-bombing guidance distinguishes activity related to the product or service from an abnormal period of activity unrelated to it. Steam says the latter is removed from the overall score.

That does not mean every organized wave of negative reviews is excluded. Product-related criticism is not described as off-topic simply because it arrives suddenly or in large numbers. When a score changes sharply, consider what the reviews say before concluding that the activity was filtered or that the criticism is irrelevant.
When comparing two games
Use the same frame of reference for both games so the comparison is useful:
- Time window: Compare recent scores with recent scores, and lifetime scores with lifetime scores.
- Who counts: Remember that score eligibility and review visibility are not identical.
- Review context: Compare dates, playtime, language, and Early Access status where relevant.
- Reasons: Read specific written feedback that matches your needs; a percentage does not explain why players recommend a game.
- Selection and filtering: Prominent store-page reviews are selected for recency and helpfulness. If using Steam’s API, note that its filters affect which reviews appear.
Steam’s API supports different filters and sorts, and off-topic activity is filtered by default. Its Helpful filter can also expand the day range until it finds results. A dataset returned with particular settings should not automatically be treated as exhaustive.
