Steam’s review percentage shows the share of submitted reviews that are positive; the label beside it groups that share into a category. It is a snapshot of reviewers’ recommendations, not a critic score or a promise that you will enjoy the game. To judge whether it matters to you, compare the time period and language behind the score, then read reviews that explain their rating.
What the Steam review percentage means
Valve describes a game’s Review Score as a categorization based on the percentage of positive reviews. In practical terms, the percentage summarizes how many reviewers recommended the product; the accompanying label makes that result easier to scan. Steam’s Reviews FAQ explains the score system.
The summary does not tell you why people liked or disliked a game, whether they agree about the same issue, or whether their priorities match yours. Treat it as a starting signal, then use written reviews to understand the reasons behind it.
Recent Reviews versus the overall score
These scores answer different questions. Recent Reviews indicate sentiment among a game’s newer reviews, while the overall score reflects a longer history. A gap between them can be a reason to investigate recent changes, but it does not explain the cause by itself.
#1 Best Overall
Valve’s description says the recent score uses positive reviews posted during the preceding 30 days, when there are enough reviews in that period and the game has been available on Steam for at least 45 days. These eligibility conditions are described in Valve’s 2016 Steam announcement. If a recent score is absent, the title may not meet the conditions for that summary.
Why the score can differ by language
Since August 18, 2025, Steam calculates language-specific Review Scores for some qualifying games. Valve says the displayed score is based on the viewer’s primary language when a title has more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews overall and at least 200 reviews in a language. Valve also states that 10 reviews are required for an overall score; that is distinct from the higher thresholds for language-specific scores.

For a qualifying title, use See language breakdown to compare language groups or switch to the overall score. Two people can therefore see different displayed percentages for the same game if their primary-language settings differ. When comparing scores, make sure you are looking at the same language group. Valve announced this change in Updates to User Review Scores Based on Language.
How to read individual player reviews
Open reviews and look beyond the headline sentiment. Steam shows helpful reviews and provides controls for browsing and rating them. Review entries include the author’s playtime, and Steam prioritizes helpful reviews written in the language you are browsing in. Use that information as context, not as proof that a review is right for you.
- Check the reason. Identify the specific feature, problem, or experience the reviewer describes.
- Check relevance. Decide whether that issue matters to your play style, hardware, accessibility needs, or intended use.
- Use playtime as context. It can help you understand how long the reviewer played, but it does not establish that their judgment is representative.
- Read more than one perspective. A handful of reviews can clarify common themes, but the aggregate alone cannot show how widely a particular complaint is shared.
How to investigate a sudden score change
A sudden dip or spike is a signal to look for context, not a verdict about the game. Valve defines review bombing as a large number of reviews posted in a compressed time frame with the aim of lowering a game’s Review Score. It also notes that the reasons can involve matters outside the game itself.
- Look at the review histogram on the product’s review page to see how the positive-to-negative ratio changes over time.
- Open reviews from the period when the score shifted and look for the stated cause.
- Separate criticism of the game itself from reactions to an external event or decision.
- Decide whether the cited issue affects your own decision to play or buy.
Valve explains review bombing and the time-based histogram in its User Reviews announcement.

A quick way to compare Steam review scores
- Match the time window: compare Recent with Recent, or overall with overall.
- Match the language: check whether both scores refer to the same language group or to the overall score.
- Consider review activity: a percentage is more useful when you also understand the volume and timing of reviews supporting it.
- Read the reasons: judge whether the complaints or praise concern aspects that matter to you.
