Sports streaming rights are licences that decide which service can show an event, in which places, and under what conditions. A game may be missing from a league’s app because another broadcaster has exclusive rights in your area, because the service does not have rights in your country, or because the league’s blackout rules apply to your location. Paying for a league streaming subscription does not necessarily include every game live.

How sports streaming rights work

A league, team, or event organizer licenses broadcast rights to distributors. Those rights can be divided by territory and by type of coverage: a broadcaster might have regional rights for a local market, while another outlet has national rights to selected games. A streaming service can show only the games and territories covered by the licences it holds, and it must respect restrictions that reserve an event for another distributor.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) puts the territorial principle plainly: “Broadcasters must buy the rights to televise sporting events in the areas they serve.” The CRTC’s explainer, “Blackouts of sports events and TV shows,” was modified July 6, 2022. Rights arrangements differ by sport, country, season, event, and platform, so one league’s blackout pattern is not a universal rule.

What a blackout or geo-block means

A blackout is a restriction that prevents a particular viewer from watching a particular event through a particular service. Geo-blocking is the technical practice of limiting online content according to the user’s geographic location. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in report WIPO/ACE/16/13, paragraph 119, describes geo-blocking as a way to restrict online access based on location and explains its role in protecting exclusive territorial licences.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

In practice, the restriction can reflect either where you are or which event rights apply there. A game unavailable on a league app may be available from a local or national broadcaster that holds the relevant rights. A service may also lack rights for the viewer’s country altogether.

How a streaming service determines your location

Services use location signals to apply the territory rules in their licences. ESPN says it may use different technologies and methods to verify location and requires location access to use its service. The NBA says League Pass may determine location from an IP address or device location services; for US and Canadian blackout coverage, a ZIP code helps identify teams covered by a local broadcaster.

A viewer’s physical location does not necessarily line up neatly with a city boundary. Leagues and rights holders can define territories for their own purposes, and a service’s decision depends on the location information it receives as well as the applicable rights rules. If an NBA blackout appears incorrect, the NBA recommends troubleshooting the device or connection and using its support options.

Service and source Territory or game restriction Live or delayed access described How to check
NBA League Pass; NBA Help Center page updated July 30, 2026 The NBA says live League Pass coverage is available in every country except the US and Canada, where blackouts apply. In the US, local NBA team games and all nationally broadcast games are blacked out; in Canada, nationally broadcast games are blacked out. For US subscribers, the page describes locally broadcast games becoming available three days after the live broadcast concludes, and nationally broadcast games at 6:00 a.m. ET the following day. For Canadian subscribers, it describes nationally broadcast games becoming available on demand roughly three hours after the game concludes. US viewers can check by ZIP code. The NBA identifies regional sports networks and national broadcasters as alternative sources for many US blackouts.
MLB.TV; MLB terms, undated page accessed October 3, 2026 Live access can depend on game date, viewer location, and local, regional, national, and international broadcast exclusivities. Home-territory restrictions may apply whether the club is playing at home or away. Some games unavailable live become archived approximately 90 minutes after the applicable game concludes. US subscribers are directed to MLB’s ZIP-code availability check.
NFL+; NFL Support article dated July 17, 2025 The cited article distinguishes local games from out-of-market games, meaning games outside the viewer’s designated broadcast region. Its rules describe that NFL+ season and should not be assumed to describe other NFL products or later seasons. The article describes live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games on phones, tablets, and mobile web browsers, plus live audio for every game. It also lists seven live NFL Network games for the season covered by that article. NFL directs viewers to a ZIP-code availability lookup through its Ways to Watch information.
ESPN; ESPN blackout information ESPN says certain live events may be blacked out based on viewer location, including a game in a participating team’s home television territory. League-specific policies can also apply to third-party products accessed through ESPN. Not stated by ESPN in the cited blackout information. Check the event’s applicable league and service information for availability.

What to do when a game is unavailable

  1. Check the exact game and location. Use the league or service’s official schedule and availability checker; enter the ZIP code or location requested. NBA, MLB, and NFL each direct viewers to location-based checks.
  2. Identify who has the rights. Look for the local or national broadcaster listed for that event in your area. For many US NBA blackouts, the NBA points viewers to a regional sports network or national broadcaster.
  3. Check whether access is delayed rather than unavailable. The league’s policy may provide on-demand access after the live broadcast or game ends; the timing and applicable games vary by service.
  4. If the location result seems wrong, troubleshoot the service’s location signals. For an NBA League Pass blackout that appears incorrect, the NBA recommends checking the device or connection and contacting support through its help options.

Why another subscription or device setting may not fix it

A subscription grants access only within the rights and rules attached to that product. Adding a general streaming bundle does not necessarily include the broadcaster with rights to a particular game, and changing a device setting cannot create a licence that the service does not hold. ESPN also says league blackout policies can continue to apply to third-party products and services accessed through ESPN.
