The SpaceX suit shown publicly in 2017 is a custom-fit pressure suit for astronauts riding inside Crew Dragon—not the bulky suit used for spacewalks. NASA says SpaceX designed it to protect crew members against possible cabin depressurization during trips to and from the International Space Station. Photos are no longer merely “coming soon”: NASA’s current Commercial Crew Program Press Kit includes a section and image captions for the suit.
What does the SpaceX suit look like?
The 2017 reveal presented a sleek, light-colored suit with a clean, streamlined appearance. Elon Musk said in an Instagram post, as quoted by WIRED’s 2017 coverage, “Was incredibly hard to balance aesthetics and function,” adding, “Easy to do either separately.” The appearance is part of the story, but the suit’s more important distinction is its role as flight equipment worn inside Dragon.
NASA says each passenger’s suit is custom-made. The public materials cited here do not provide a complete technical specification or suit-performance figures.
What is the SpaceX suit for?
The suit is intended for crew members during travel to and from the ISS inside Dragon. NASA says it is designed to protect against potential depressurization. It is therefore cabin safety equipment for a spacecraft flight, not an independent, self-contained spacesuit for working outside Dragon.

NASA’s press kit explains the suit’s connection: “A single connection point on the suit’s thigh attaches life support systems, including air and power connections.” That describes a link to Dragon’s life-support systems; it does not establish that the cabin suit carries its own independent spacesuit life-support pack.
Is the SpaceX suit for spacewalks?
No. The suit shown in the 2017 reveal is an intravehicular suit, meaning it is worn inside the spacecraft. Spacewalks require extravehicular activity (EVA) suits designed for work outside a pressurized cabin.

SpaceX later developed a distinct EVA suit by upgrading its Dragon cabin suit. NASA’s Office of Inspector General reports that astronauts demonstrated that EVA suit on Polaris Dawn in September 2024, with an umbilical to Dragon providing life-support features during the spacewalk. The report describes an intended path toward future planetary surface operations; it does not establish that the suit is qualified for the Moon or Mars.
Who developed the suit, and what was NASA’s role?
SpaceX designed the cabin suit. NASA’s role was to establish and manage the Commercial Crew Program and contract for crew transportation services, not to design this suit. NASA awarded Commercial Crew Transportation Capability contracts to SpaceX and Boeing in 2014. SpaceX began regular crew rotations after the successful Demo-2 flight test and agency certification; the Crew-1 mission launched on November 15, 2020, according to NASA’s Commercial Crew Program Press Kit.

How many passengers does the suit accommodate?
NASA says Dragon can carry up to seven passengers, while NASA missions carry up to four astronauts. Those are spacecraft capacity figures, not a suit-performance statistic; the cabin suit is custom-made for each passenger.
