Smart rings can track signals such as heart rate, movement and temperature variation; some also estimate blood oxygen during sleep. Their apps use those signals to infer things such as sleep stages, respiration and recovery. Those estimates can help you follow personal trends, but they are not the same as direct clinical measurements or a diagnosis. One important exception to keep clear: the FDA warns that no smartwatch or smart ring is authorized, cleared or approved to measure or estimate blood glucose on its own.
What a smart ring’s sensors actually detect
A ring records physical signals. The app’s labels and scores are interpretations built from those signals, not direct readings of every state they describe. Sensor availability and how a feature works vary by model.
Optical pulse signals
Photoplethysmography (PPG) uses light to detect changes associated with blood volume in the finger. Oura says Ring 4 uses green and infrared PPG sensors for heart rate and heart-rate variability around the clock, as well as sleep respiration. These are sensor-derived measures; a recovery or readiness score built from them is an app interpretation. Oura Ring 4 sensor details.

A reliable health tracker and activity tracker without subscription for men and women – ideal for everyday wellness.
Temperature variation
A ring can track temperature variation or trends at the finger; that is not the same as a clinical core-body-temperature measurement. Oura describes its temperature feature as tracking average body-temperature variations and trends. Oura Ring 4 sensor details.
Blood oxygen during sleep
Oura describes its SpO2 feature as sending red and infrared light into the finger during sleep and measuring reflected light to estimate peripheral oxygen saturation. On Oura Gen3 or later, the app provides results after sleep periods longer than three hours and reports the day’s longest sleep period. This is a sleep-period estimate, not an on-demand clinical reading. Oura Blood Oxygen Sensing (SpO2).

What the app estimates from those signals
Sleep duration and stages, respiration estimates, activity summaries, sleep scores and recovery or readiness indicators are algorithmic outputs. For example, Oura says its sleep-stage algorithm combines heart rate, breathing, movement and temperature. A ring does not directly observe brain activity, so a sleep-stage label is an estimate rather than a direct measurement of the brain state. Oura’s explanation of sleep tracking.
The distinction matters when interpreting a result: the sensor may record a pulse or movement signal, while software classifies that pattern as a stage of sleep or a recovery score. Different brands and models may use different sensors and algorithms, so do not assume every ring measures every signal.

What smart rings cannot establish on their own
They cannot diagnose a medical condition from wellness metrics
Oura says its ring is not a medical device intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor or prevent medical conditions. Consumer ring readings and scores should not replace a clinically indicated measurement or medical advice. A wellness metric alone cannot establish sleep apnea, an arrhythmia, infection or another condition. Oura FAQs.
They should not be used to measure blood glucose
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states: “The FDA has not authorized, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring that is intended to measure or estimate blood glucose values on its own.” The agency warns that non-invasive glucose claims do not directly test blood glucose, and inaccurate data could lead to dangerous medication decisions. If your care depends on glucose readings, use an appropriate FDA-authorized device chosen with your clinician. FDA safety communication on smartwatches, smart rings and blood glucose.

How accurate are smart-ring measurements?
There is no single accuracy percentage that applies to all rings or all metrics. Performance depends on the model and software, what is being estimated, how the ring fits, the reference method and the study population. An accuracy claim is useful only when it names the exact metric, device, validation method and participants.
Oura’s company-authored account of a 2024 University of Tokyo study reports a comparison of its Sleep Staging Algorithm 2.0 with ambulatory polysomnography. The study included 96 participants aged 20–70 and 421,045 30-second epochs, with up to three nights per participant. For two-category sleep-versus-wake classification, Oura reports 91.7–91.8% accuracy, 94.4–94.5% sensitivity and 73.0–74.6% specificity. In that study, sensitivity was higher than specificity, meaning the algorithm was better at recognizing sleep than wake. These are results reported for that algorithm and study, not a guarantee for other models or individual users. Oura’s account of sleep tracking validation.

Why readings can vary
For its nighttime SpO2 feature, Oura identifies fit and ring orientation, movement during sleep, restricted hand or arm blood flow, altitude, congestion, alcohol, age and sleep quality as factors that can affect readings. It also says nighttime blood oxygen is generally slightly lower than daytime readings and small night-to-night differences are expected; longer-term trends are more useful than interpreting one night in isolation. Oura Blood Oxygen Sensing (SpO2).
Fit and setup also differ by product. Oura says sizing varies by generation and recommends wearing the sensors on the palm side. Quick Recap
How to compare smart rings for health tracking
- Check which signals the exact model supports. Look for documented heart rate or PPG, HRV, temperature, movement and SpO2 features; do not infer that a feature exists because another ring offers it. Oura Ring 4 sensor details; Samsung Galaxy Ring sleep tracking.
- Find out when and how a metric is collected. A sleep-period estimate, such as Oura’s SpO2 result, is not an on-demand clinical measurement. Check the manufacturer’s conditions and minimum wear or sleep period. Oura SpO2 details.
- Separate sensor readings from app interpretations. Ask whether the feature records a physical signal or infers a score, stage or category from multiple signals. Oura sleep-tracking explanation.
- Look for validation of the exact metric and model. Prefer evidence that identifies the reference standard, sample and sensitivity or specificity—not an unqualified claim that a ring is a particular percentage accurate. Oura’s account of its sleep validation study.
- Confirm fit and app compatibility. Sizing and sensor placement can affect use, and app workflows vary. Check instructions for the exact generation and phone ecosystem before relying on a feature. Oura Ring 4; Samsung Galaxy Ring.
- Check regulatory status for the specific use. FDA resources describe sensor-based digital health devices that meet applicable premarket requirements, but the list is not comprehensive. Verify the device, feature, intended use and jurisdiction rather than assuming a consumer ring is medically authorized. FDA sensor-based digital health technology.
