Skull fractures can help archaeologists assess whether damage happened during life, around the time of death, or after burial, and may suggest how it occurred. But a fracture by itself cannot prove that it caused death, establish homicide, or determine manner of death. Those conclusions require evidence beyond the fracture and careful consideration of preservation and burial context.

What a skull fracture can—and cannot—show

Researchers begin with the observable damage: its location, distribution, shape, and condition. They then assess when it may have formed and whether its pattern is consistent with a mechanism such as blunt-force or projectile trauma. Each step is an interpretation, not an automatic verdict.

The distinction matters because skeletal-trauma analysis has a defined scope. The 2024 first edition of ANSI/ASB Standard 147 sets requirements for documenting, describing, interpreting, and reporting skeletal trauma, including timing and mechanism. It explicitly states: “This document does not address cause and manner of death.” A fracture assessment can contribute to a broader investigation, but it does not settle those questions on its own.

How researchers assess when the damage happened

Healed injury: damage sustained during life

Evidence of healing can support an interpretation that an injury occurred while the person was alive and survived long enough for the bone to respond. The presence of an old, healed injury does not establish that it contributed to death.

Perimortem damage: fresh-bone characteristics, not a timestamp

“Perimortem” describes fractures with characteristics associated with bone that was still fresh when it broke. It does not pinpoint an exact time, prove the person died from the injury, or establish that the fracture was inflicted by another person.

Post-depositional damage: breakage after burial

Soil pressure, movement, excavation, and other changes after burial can damage bone. Archaeological guidance emphasizes considering taphonomic conditions and distinguishing such damage from injury sustained during life. A break that resembles trauma in isolation may have another explanation in its archaeological context.

What fracture patterns may suggest about mechanism

Once researchers assess timing, they consider whether the fracture’s morphology is consistent with a particular mechanism. Relevant observations can include the injury’s location and distribution, radiating or concentric patterns, bevel direction, and traits associated with fresh fractures. These features must be interpreted together; none is standalone proof of a weapon or event.

  • Blunt force: A pattern may be consistent with impact by a blunt object, but that interpretation depends on the fracture features and context.
  • Projectile trauma: Fracture patterns and bevel direction may help distinguish a gunshot injury from blunt trauma, though a pattern can be misread.
  • Other explanations: Sharp force, thermal effects, post-depositional processes, or an undetermined mechanism may need consideration. The mechanism may remain unresolved.

A 1996 study of a historic cemetery skull in Memphis examined radiating fractures, concentric heaving fractures, and bevel direction as clues for distinguishing gunshot trauma from blunt trauma. The case also demonstrates the interpretive risk: a fracture pattern can be mistaken for evidence of a particular mechanism. Does a fracture around the time of death prove the person died from it?

No. A perimortem interpretation concerns the condition of the bone when it fractured; it does not by itself show that the fracture caused death or that the injury occurred at the exact moment of death. A fracture can contribute to an assessment, but cause and manner require a wider evaluation.

An analysis of cranial blunt-force trauma from the Schild site, dated AD 700–1200, found that confidence in fractures having occurred at the time of death diminished under closer forensic analysis. Its conclusions caution that perimortem fracturing does not always represent a time-of-death injury and is not necessarily homicide. Human Skull Model for Anatomy Study, Life Size 3-Part Detachable Anatomy Skull Model with 55 Numbered Landmarks, Anatomical Correct Skull for Studying, Medical Students
  • [BUILT FOR FUTURE MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS] Designed specifically for medical, nursing, dental, PA, PT, OT, and A&P students, this life-size human skull model makes learning skull anatomy less overwhelming. With 55 numbered landmarks, a printed study card, an online PDF guide, and guided study videos, you'll build a complete learning system that makes it easier to understand anatomy, memorize structures, and prepare for lab practicals with confidence.
  • [55 NUMBERED LANDMARKS FOR ACTIVE LEARNING] Instead of simply looking at a skull, actively test yourself. Identify each numbered landmark, name the structure from memory, then verify your answer using the study card or downloadable PDF. Reinforce cranial bones, sutures, foramina, and anatomical landmarks through repeated self-testing—the most effective way to retain complex anatomy.
  • [REMOVABLE 3-PART DESIGN FOR TRUE SPATIAL UNDERSTANDING] Separate the magnetic skullcap and removable mandible to examine the calvaria, skull base, and lower jaw individually or together. Seeing each structure from multiple angles helps students connect textbook illustrations with real three-dimensional anatomy and better understand spatial relationships.
  • [RED PAINTED SUTURES MAKE LANDMARKS EASIER TO FIND] Bright red cranial sutures contrast clearly against the bone-white PVC surface, while black numbered landmarks remain easy to read. This visual separation helps students quickly distinguish bones, sutures, and anatomical boundaries during anatomy review and practical exam preparation.
  • [MOVABLE SPRING-SUPPORTED JAW FOR DENTAL & MANDIBLE STUDY] The articulated mandible opens naturally to demonstrate tooth position, occlusion, and jaw movement. Observe the relationship between the mandible and cranium during anatomy or dental training. Use gentle hand pressure to protect the spring connectors during repeated study.

Why numerical accuracy figures need context

A 2020 study identified nine traits associated with fresh cranial fractures and developed a probabilistic decision algorithm to distinguish perimortem from postmortem fractures. The study’s authors reported 87% accuracy for that method in its study context. That figure is not a universal accuracy rate for archaeological skull interpretation, and it does not mean an individual fracture’s cause or the person’s manner of death is established with 87% certainty. See Distinction between perimortem and postmortem fractures in human cranial bone.
