Entry-level game studios usually look for three things: a sound foundation in the discipline you want to enter, proof that you can apply it in a real or self-directed project, and evidence that you can collaborate, accept feedback and keep learning. A computer-science, design, art or other degree can help, but it does not replace demonstrable work. The right evidence depends on whether you are applying for programming, design, quality assurance, art, audio or another role.

Hiring practices vary by studio, location, project and intake. The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) study cited here interviewed 21 hiring personnel or recruiters representing 20 companies, with experience spanning more than 42 game companies. Its findings are useful qualitative signals, not a universal hiring formula or a 2026 market survey.

The capabilities studios are trying to verify

Discipline-specific fundamentals

A junior programmer must be able to write and read code, investigate defects and learn an unfamiliar codebase. A junior designer needs to reason about mechanics, systems and player behavior. A QA candidate needs to test methodically and describe defects clearly. Art and audio applicants need work that shows visual or sonic judgment appropriate to the role. Studios are not hiring for a generic “game developer” skill list; they are assessing readiness for a particular set of tasks.

Applied ability, not only coursework

Recruiters interviewed for the IGDA report repeatedly valued hands-on experience and a solid portfolio. That experience can come from a shipped or unfinished student project, a game jam, an internship, a mod, a prototype or other discipline-relevant work. The important point is that a reviewer can see what you made, what you personally did and how you solved problems. The IGDA report quotes one participant saying, “Nearly all the companies interviewed wanted recent graduates with hands-on experience and a solid portfolio to apply.” This describes the interview sample, not every employer.

Collaboration and learning behavior

Games are built by interdependent teams. Studios therefore look for communication, receptiveness to feedback, reliability and a willingness to learn tools and processes. The IGDA report says companies wanted candidates and employees to demonstrate a “growth mindset” and identify as “life-long learners.” An anonymous recruiter in the report described hiring “based on aptitude versus skill,” which signals that potential and learning ability can matter when a graduate has not yet accumulated professional experience.

Skills by entry-level discipline

Junior programming

Expect assessment of programming fundamentals rather than mastery of every engine. You should be able to explain your code, isolate a bug, make a controlled change and use source control responsibly. Basic computer-science concepts and mathematics help with data structures, performance, game logic and debugging. Readable code and a constructive response to code review are part of the job, not optional polish.

Common tools named by the Entry-Level Skills Hub include C, C++ or C#, GDScript, Unreal Engine, Unity and Git. These are examples of tools you may encounter, not a requirement to learn every engine. A small project with a clear README, commit history and a short explanation of one difficult bug often demonstrates more than a long list of technologies.

SEGA’s programming descriptions illustrate how scope changes by team: work can include game applications, servers, web services, tools and libraries. Its page names C++, C#, Java, Python and SQL as languages used depending on the work. Treat that list as SEGA’s description of its own roles, not a universal junior-programmer checklist.

Junior game design

Design applicants should be able to describe a player problem, propose mechanics or systems, test an idea and revise it when evidence contradicts the original plan. Useful foundations include systems thinking, encounter or level structure, player-centered iteration and concise design documentation. Basic scripting or engine familiarity helps you communicate with programmers and build a prototype, but the designer’s value is not reduced to knowing a particular tool.

SEGA’s designer description emphasizes communicating a concept, listening to team feedback, coordinating toward delivery and continuing to learn. You can make those qualities visible with a short playable prototype, a design brief, annotated diagrams and an iteration log that shows what changed after playtesting. Presenting those artifacts is practical portfolio advice inferred from the duties and portfolio expectations; it is not a stated requirement for every studio.

Quality assurance

Entry-level QA work rewards consistency. You should be comfortable following a test case, creating a useful test plan, reproducing a problem, recording the conditions and writing a concise bug report that another person can act on. Attention to detail, clear communication and comfort with methodical or repetitive work matter as much as enthusiasm for games.

The Entry-Level Skills Hub lists TestRail, Confluence and Microsoft Office among relevant tools, with Jira and similar systems useful to know. A graduate can demonstrate readiness with a sample test matrix and two or three well-written bug reports based on a legal-to-test game or personal prototype. Label these as samples; do not imply professional testing experience you have not had.

Art and technical art

Art roles can span characters, environments, motion, visual effects, interface and technical art. Your portfolio should therefore be targeted: show the type of work the listing requests, include process images where they clarify your decisions and identify your exact contribution to team pieces. Collaboration with design and engineering is part of the craft because assets must serve gameplay and production constraints.

SEGA states that starting artists do not necessarily need to arrive with highly specialized computer-graphics skills and may develop through training. That is a company-specific example, not permission to omit fundamentals or a portfolio. It does show why applicants should read the actual role description rather than assume every studio uses the same specialization threshold.

Audio and sound

Sound applicants may be assessed on editing, implementation, recording, composition, technical integration or a combination. Show finished examples, explain the brief and identify software and middleware used. SEGA’s sound description says applicants are not expected to arrive with every skill across the full audio-production workflow and emphasizes teamwork. Other studios may divide those responsibilities differently, so tailor evidence to the listing.

What counts as convincing evidence

Choose a role before assembling materials

“Game developer” covers substantially different jobs. Start by selecting a target discipline and reading several current listings for that discipline. The IGDA’s career guidance recommends identifying the area that interests you, researching its required skills and taking opportunities to work on games, including making them.

Show a small number of finished, relevant pieces

Three focused projects are usually easier to evaluate than an uncurated archive. For each piece, state:

  • What the project was trying to achieve.
  • Your individual responsibilities and the parts made by teammates.
  • The tools, languages or production methods used.
  • A difficult decision, defect or failed approach.
  • What feedback changed and what you learned.

A playable build, video or repository should be accompanied by enough context for a reviewer to understand it quickly. Protect confidential work and respect licenses; never upload a studio’s proprietary files.

Make teamwork visible

Include at least one collaborative example when possible. Explain how you divided work, handled a disagreement, incorporated review or recovered when a dependency slipped. A postmortem, annotated changelog or before-and-after design page can show feedback and iteration more credibly than claiming “good communication” on a résumé.

Use accessible ways to gain experience

Internships, mentorships, game jams and self-directed projects can all provide practice, but access is uneven and none guarantees employment. Ubisoft, for example, describes a mentorship program for some students and recent graduates and explicitly says it is not a hiring process. Treat such programs as learning opportunities, verify local eligibility and do not present participation as a job offer.

Does a graduate need a game-specific degree?

No single degree is required across the industry. In the IGDA interview sample, participants often emphasized capability and work samples over a particular qualification. That does not mean education is irrelevant: a degree can provide structured practice, peers and access to projects, while another degree may provide equally useful programming, writing, visual, analytical or production foundations.

SEGA’s graduate page says applicants from all fields and specializations are eligible for its listed recruitment route. This is SEGA’s stated policy for that route and should not be generalized to another employer, country or role. Always check the current listing for qualification, work-authorization, location and graduation-date rules.

For context, the Higher Education Video Game Alliance reported in 2019 that more than 520 U.S. institutions offered over 1,200 game-related programs and degrees. That is a measure of educational provision, not evidence that one type of program produces better hiring outcomes.

A practical preparation sequence

  1. Pick the target discipline. Write down the role title you will apply for and the tasks associated with it. Avoid submitting one generic portfolio to programming, design and QA openings.
  2. Extract the requirements from current listings. Separate must-have duties from optional tools, then map each requirement to a project, course assignment or honest learning plan.
  3. Finish or refine representative work. Remove broken demos, add instructions and make the first few minutes or screens easy to evaluate.
  4. Document decisions and iteration. Include a short design note, code explanation, test report, art breakdown or audio reel note that shows how evidence changed your work.
  5. Practice role-relevant interviews. Be ready to debug a small program, critique a mechanic, explain a test case or discuss an asset’s production constraints, depending on the role.
  6. Prepare collaboration examples. Use a team project to explain feedback, prioritization and a problem you resolved without overstating your authority.
  7. Recheck each studio’s process. Confirm application materials, deadlines, location and eligibility on the employer’s current graduate or jobs page. Company processes change between intakes.

How to compare roles and studios

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Discipline-specific craft What actual tasks and foundations are requested: code, design, art, audio, QA or another specialty?
Proof expected Does the employer name a portfolio, code sample, game proposal, test report, interview exercise or another form of evidence?
Degree and experience Is a qualification mandatory, are varied backgrounds accepted, and does the listing prioritize applied work?
Team practices How much written communication, cross-discipline coordination, feedback and iterative problem-solving does the role require?
Local context Do location, project, employment status, intake date or work authorization change eligibility?

This comparison prevents a common mistake: treating one studio’s tool list or graduate policy as an industry standard.

Common application mistakes and how to correct them

  • Listing tools without proof: replace a software inventory with a project link and a sentence describing what you built with each important tool.
  • Submitting a team project without attribution: identify your tasks, decisions and deliverables.
  • Showing only polished results: add a concise account of testing, iteration or debugging so reviewers can see how you work.
  • Applying to every discipline at once: choose a primary role and tailor the portfolio; add adjacent skills only when they support that role.
  • Claiming professional experience from practice work: label jams, coursework and personal projects accurately.
  • Ignoring feedback behavior: provide an example of a change made after review, playtesting or bug triage.
  • Relying on old requirements: verify the current local listing because graduate processes and eligibility can change.

What the evidence can and cannot establish

The IGDA findings are based on a limited interview sample rather than a representative survey. They indicate recurring preferences for applied ability, portfolios, aptitude, collaboration and continuous learning, but they cannot predict every studio’s screening test or hiring decision. SEGA’s role descriptions and graduate policy illustrate one employer’s approach. Ubisoft’s mentorship example is location- and intake-dependent and is not a hiring route. Use these examples to plan evidence, then let the current job listing determine your final emphasis.
