The West Australian’s 3 October 2026 headline says Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick vowed the Dockers would “unleash hell” in 2027 and promised grand-final redemption. The accessible page confirms the headline, date and journalist, Craig O’Donoghue, but its story text is subscriber-only. That means the headline is the limit of what can be verified: it signals ambition, not a confirmed tactical change or a guaranteed grand-final place.

What did Simon Garlick promise for 2027?

The West Australian headline frames Fremantle’s 2027 goal in forceful terms: “unleash hell” and seek “grand final redemption.” The article page identifies Garlick as the club’s CEO and O’Donoghue as its journalist, and is dated 3 October 2026. Its full text is restricted to subscribers, so the precise context of the vow and any further remarks are not established by the accessible information. The West Australian’s article page

In particular, the headline alone does not establish that Fremantle announced changes to coaching, recruiting, list management or football operations. Nor does it make a grand-final berth a certainty.

How does the vow fit Fremantle’s longer-term plan?

Fremantle’s official 2030 Game Plan describes a whole-club, process-driven approach intended to put both its AFL and AFLW teams in sustained premiership contention. That is a longer horizon than the headline’s 2027 language: “unleash hell” is a vivid expression of ambition, while sustained contention is the stated strategic objective. The club’s own account also acknowledges that its 2021–2025 plan achieved seven of 13 public targets, while its premiership and membership-growth goals were not met. It reported other progress, including $6 million in net cash reserves, $6 million invested in upgraded Cockburn facilities, 150,000 annual participants across community programs and an 85% staff engagement score. These are figures reported by Fremantle in 2025; they describe the club’s account of the earlier plan, not evidence that a 2027 result is assured.

Garlick’s remarks in the 2030-plan announcement provide a useful distinction between aspiration and execution. He said: “We exist to win premierships but saying you want to win one doesn’t deliver it.” He also described the next phase as being about “alignment, discipline and the daily behaviours” needed to contend consistently. Those are quotes from the club’s plan announcement, not verified quotations from The West Australian’s 2026 story.

What does “grand final redemption” mean in context?

The phrase suggests a return to the AFL Grand Final as a form of atonement or achievement, but the headline does not specify what event or setback “redemption” refers to. Historical context is limited: an AFL.com.au report published on 22 February 2024 described Fremantle as having made one men’s Grand Final appearance by then, in 2013. That is a dated snapshot, not a statement of the club’s current total after 2026. AFL.com.au’s 2024 report
