Satellite images can show visible structures, roads, runways, earthworks and changes between image dates—but they do not automatically reveal what a base is doing, who or what is present, or why something changed. What an image can support depends on its actual resolution, collection date, viewing conditions and other context. It is a dated observation, not a live feed.

What a satellite image can show

When the feature is large and clear enough for the image, an analyst may be able to distinguish physical layouts such as building footprints, roads, runways and earthworks. Comparing images collected on different dates can also show visible change: a new structure, a cleared area or an altered road layout, for example. Those are observations about what appears in the imagery, not proof of what the change means.

USGS describes aerial photographs and satellite images as tools for observing and comparing conditions on Earth. Its guidance on imagery interpretation is available in Aerial Photographs and Satellite Images. NGA defines GEOINT as “the exploitation and analysis of imagery and geospatial information to describe, assess and visually depict physical features and geographically referenced activities on the Earth” in its Products and Services overview. That definition underscores the distinction between imagery and the analysis built from it.

Resolution limits the detail you can distinguish

Spatial resolution describes the ground detail represented by image pixels; it helps determine which features can be distinguished. A building may be visible while smaller details on or around it are not. Enlarging a low-resolution image increases its display size, not the amount of information captured. USGS puts it plainly: “Enlarging an aerial photograph will only make the object bigger; it will not add more detail in the object.” See its FAQ about seeing a house in an aerial photograph.

Metal Earth Voyager Spacecraft 3D Metal Model Kit Fascinations
  • HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
  • NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
  • VOYAGER – 1.5 Sheet Model with a moderate difficulty level. Assembled Size: 1.38 x 1.77 x 6.70 inches.
  • FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
  • HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.

Resolution is only one factor. Scale, image quality, collection conditions, date, spectral bands, processing and the analyst’s question all affect interpretation. Cloud, haze, shadow or viewing angle can hide or distort features. A displayed color may be assigned or enhanced rather than natural color, so appearance alone is not a reliable guide to what a surface is made of.

Can satellite images identify vehicles or equipment?

An image may show an object or a change in its location, but visible pixels do not necessarily support a confident identification of a particular vehicle, weapon, unit or type of equipment. Nor does seeing an object establish whether it is operational, occupied or being used for a particular purpose. The specific imagery, its resolution and conditions, and corroborating evidence matter. Public sources cited here do not establish an accuracy rate for identifying objects or inferring activity at military bases, so a universal percentage would be misleading.

Keep three levels of a claim separate:

  • Visible evidence: what appears in the image, such as a structure or a changed area.
  • Interpretation: what an analyst thinks that feature or change could indicate.
  • Conclusion: a broader claim about activity, capability or intent, which needs context and independent corroboration.

How current are satellite images?

Every image has an acquisition date: it records conditions when it was collected, not necessarily conditions now. A provider’s nominal collection capability or revisit cadence does not guarantee a suitable, cloud-free image of a particular place on a particular day. The date, coverage and conditions of each image need to be checked before using it to describe current activity.

Example What the published figure describes What it does not establish
NGA Commercial Imagery Regional Orthos 0.5–1 meter resolution, as stated on NGA’s Controlled Imagery page. The page’s publication date is not stated. It is not a specification for all commercial satellite imagery, nor a guarantee of availability over a particular base or date.
Planet service described by NRO in 2019 Daily collection of large-area imagery at 3–5 meter resolution under a specific multi-year subscription service contract, described in the October 15, 2019 NRO announcement. It is a historical description of that contract, not a claim about current public availability or every Planet product.

A regional orthomosaic, broad-area collection and high-resolution tasked image serve different needs. Those two figures describe different products and dates; neither should be treated as a universal measure of what satellite imagery can show.

What an image cannot establish on its own

A visible structure or pattern may support an assessment, but a single image alone may not establish exact equipment, occupancy, operational status, mission or intent. Even a change between dates shows that the imagery differs; it does not, by itself, explain why. Strong claims require context and, especially when consequential, independent corroboration.

Public commercial specifications also do not disclose the exact capabilities or performance of classified military imaging systems. Commercial resolution figures cannot be used to claim what classified systems can or cannot see. NGA’s public products page says the agency does not sell or perform services for the public; its public service offerings are distinct from commercial imagery services.
