Samsung said it began mass-producing 12GB and 16GB LPDDR5X memory packages just 0.65mm high in August 2024. The milestone gives mobile-device makers a thinner memory component that may free space inside phones and other devices and help with thermal management—but it does not mean a named retail device is already using the package, or that consumers will see a direct performance boost.
What Samsung announced
In an August 6, 2024 announcement, Samsung said mass production had begun for 12GB and 16GB packages of 12nm-class LPDDR5X DRAM. Samsung described the 0.65mm package as the thinnest among existing LPDDR DRAM packages with capacities of 12GB or more. This is a component-level manufacturing and packaging milestone. Samsung said the packages are intended for mobile processor makers and mobile-device manufacturers—not sold as a consumer upgrade. The announcement did not name a phone, tablet, or laptop confirmed to contain this exact package.

The package uses four layers, with two LPDDR DRAMs in each layer. Samsung said it optimized printed circuit board (PCB) and epoxy molding compound (EMC) techniques and used back-lapping, which it defines as grinding the back of a wafer, to reduce package height. Samsung’s packaging description

Stacking memory lets a manufacturer put capacity into a compact footprint. Here, the stated goal is to reduce the package’s vertical space inside a device. That can give device designers more room to work with, but the final result depends on the layout and cooling design of each product.
What the thinner package could change in a device
More room for internal components
A lower-profile memory package can help manufacturers allocate internal space among components. Samsung said the reduced height could make more space available inside mobile devices. It does not establish that a particular device will become thinner: manufacturers may use the space for other components, structural changes, or a different internal layout.

Potential help with heat management
Samsung said the package’s thinner construction could improve airflow and thermal management in high-performance mobile devices, including devices running on-device AI workloads. Compared with its previous-generation product, Samsung reported approximately 9% lower thickness and about 21.2% better heat resistance. Those are company-reported comparisons; the announcement did not provide an independent test or a model-by-model device result. Samsung’s comparison figures
Improved heat resistance at the package level is not the same as a guaranteed reduction in a device’s operating temperature. Overall temperatures also depend on the processor, workload, cooling system, enclosure, and software. Samsung’s figures describe its comparison between memory products, not a measured temperature change in a finished phone.

What the announcement does—and does not—say about performance
The August release focuses on package height, capacity, construction, and thermal management. It does not give a package-specific memory speed or benchmark proving that devices using this package will run faster.
In a separate April 17, 2024 announcement, Samsung described an LPDDR5X development supporting speeds of up to 10.7Gbps. The company also claimed more than 25% higher performance, more than 30% more capacity, and 25% higher power efficiency compared with its previous generation, and said mass production was scheduled for the second half of 2024 after customer verification. Samsung presented the 24GB and 32GB configurations as future designs it planned to develop for upcoming devices. Where LPDDR5X fits beyond phones
Samsung describes LPDDR5X as low-power memory for smartphones, tablets, and laptops. In a later Samsung Semiconductor interview, Task Leader JunYoung Lee and Principal Engineer JinSuk Chung discussed LPDDR applications expanding to PCs, servers, and automotive uses. That interview provides company context about product categories and market direction; it does not confirm that the exact 0.65mm package is used in any named product.
