On an NFL Game Status Report, Out means the player will not play in the game covered by that report. It describes expected availability for that specific game—not the seriousness of an injury, a diagnosis, or when the player might return.
What does “Out” mean?
The NFL defines the Game Status Report designation as “Out – Will not play.” The report is meant to describe a player’s anticipated availability for the club’s next game, rather than provide a medical assessment. NFL injury-report policy
In practical terms, if a player is listed as Out for a particular matchup, he will not play in that game. The designation does not establish how many games he will miss or when he will be available again.
How Out differs from Questionable and Doubtful
| Game status | NFL definition |
|---|---|
| Out | Will not play. |
| Doubtful | Unlikely to play. |
| Questionable | Uncertain if the player will play. |
These are availability descriptions, not numerical probability bands in the NFL policy. In particular, “Doubtful” should not be read as a precise percentage chance, and “Questionable” does not guarantee that a player will take the field. NFL injury-report policy

Game status is not the same as practice participation
Practice reports record whether a player did not participate, participated on a limited basis, or fully participated. Game status is a separate designation for the upcoming game. The NFL eliminated “Out” as a practice-report category to avoid confusion with the Game Status Report’s “Out” designation. A player may therefore have a practice participation entry during the week and receive a separate game-status designation.
When reports are filed and updated
Filing deadlines depend on the scheduled day of the game. Under the NFL’s 2026 important-dates calendar, the weekly Game Status Report deadline is 4:00 p.m. New York time on the applicable reporting day. If a player’s condition changes after the initial status filing, the change must be reported. Because timing and status can change, check the latest official club or league report for the specific matchup; the 2026 calendar should not be assumed to apply in later seasons. Yes. The NFL policy requires a player who will not play to be reported whether the reason is injury-related or not. When a player’s availability is in question for a non-injury reason, the report identifies the matter as “Not Injury Related.”

How to read a player’s listing
- Check which game the report covers.
- Read the game-status category separately from practice participation.
- Look for the latest report or update, especially if the player’s condition has changed.
- Treat “Out” as applying to that game only; it does not supply a diagnosis or return date.
