For Cox cable internet, the modem—not the Wi-Fi router—must be certified by Cox and support your subscribed speed tier. A separate router does not need Cox certification; it needs to suit your connection and home. Cox recommends at least Wi-Fi 6 for a separate router. With Cox Fiber, the Cox-installed ONT acts as the modem, and you connect a router or gateway for Wi-Fi or multiple devices.

Which equipment setup do you need?

The right equipment depends first on whether Cox service reaches your home over coaxial cable or fiber. On coax service, you need a compatible cable modem. On fiber, Cox provides an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), so you do not use a coax cable modem at the fiber handoff.

Service and setup Equipment needed What to check
Cox coax, separate devices A Cox-certified cable modem plus a standalone router if the modem does not provide Wi-Fi. The modem’s exact model must appear on Cox’s certified list and support your plan speed. Cox recommends Wi-Fi 6 or newer for the separate router.
Cox coax, combined gateway A modem-router gateway combines the modem and Wi-Fi functions. Cox offers its Panoramic Wifi Gateway. For customer-owned equipment, check that the gateway’s modem is certified for Cox and supports your plan speed.
Cox Fiber Cox-installed ONT plus a router or gateway for Wi-Fi or multiple devices. The ONT is the modem-equivalent at the fiber handoff; a coax cable modem is not the device needed there.

How to check whether a Cox cable modem is compatible

  1. Find the exact model name or number on the modem’s label or its product documentation. Do not rely on a retailer’s general claim that a modem works with cable internet.

  2. Open Cox’s certified cable modem list and look for that exact model.

Can you use your own router with Cox?

Yes. Cox’s certification requirement in its compatibility guidance applies to cable modems. A standalone router distributes the internet connection to devices over Wi-Fi or Ethernet; it is not the cable modem that connects to Cox’s coax network. Cox recommends Wi-Fi 6 or newer for a separate router. Choose one for your home’s coverage and device needs, without treating the router itself as Cox-certified.

Netgear Nighthawk Cable Modem WiFi Router Combo C7000-Compatibility Cable Providers including Xfinity by Comcast, Cox (Renewed)
  • Compatible with major cable internet providers including Xfinity and Cox. NOT compatible with Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, CenturyLink, DSL providers, DirecTV, DISH and any bundled voice service. Best for cable provider plans up to 800Mbps.

If your modem already includes Wi-Fi, it may be a gateway and you may not need a separate router. A separate router is needed when your modem does not provide Wi-Fi and you want wireless access.

Can you use a previously owned modem?

Cox says a customer-owned modem can be used at no charge, provided it meets the certification and plan-speed requirements. A previously owned modem must also be disconnected from any other account: Cox says it cannot activate a modem that remains connected to another account.

What changes when you bring your own equipment?

Cox describes customer-owned equipment as offering more choice over equipment and budget, while placing responsibility for several ongoing tasks on the customer. Cox says customers using retail equipment are responsible for certification, speed-tier support, security settings, upgrades, and troubleshooting after Cox has confirmed its service is working. Cox’s support for equipment covers devices bought or rented directly from Cox.

Cox also identifies Panoramic Wifi features that customers using retail equipment do not receive. Review Cox’s current equipment terms if those features or provider support matter to you.

What if Wi-Fi coverage is weak in a larger home?

Router compatibility and whole-home coverage are separate questions. A router can connect to a compatible Cox setup but still fail to provide the coverage you need throughout your home. Cox describes Panoramic Wifi Pods as an optional coverage expansion for Panoramic Wifi; they should not be assumed to work as an add-on for third-party routers.
