Roman perfumes were usually scented oils or ointments: an oil base combined with fragrant plant materials and other aromatics. Recipes varied by scent, place, and period. People applied them as part of personal grooming, including after bathing, while perfume also appeared in funerary honors and debates about luxury.
What ingredients went into Roman perfume?
In Natural History, the first-century CE author Pliny the Elder describes two main elements in unguents: an oil base and fragrant substances. He writes, “There are two elements which enter into the composition of unguents, the juices and the solid parts.” Pliny also mentions colouring matter; salt could help preserve an oil’s properties, while gum and resin could help a scent last.
Here, “perfume” often means an oil-based unguent, not a modern alcohol-based spray. A fragrance might be relatively simple or combine several ingredients. Pliny’s account describes practices and products known to him, not one standard formula used throughout the Roman world.

- Herbs and other aromatics: His examples include myrtle, marjoram, lily, calamus, and nard.
- Spices and resins: He names cinnamon and myrrh, among other fragrant materials.
- Additional ingredients: Some recipes included honey, wine, saffron, or colouring materials.
Pliny associates formulas with places such as Mendes, Cyprus, Cos, and Cilicia. Those examples show variation in recipes and claimed origins; they do not establish that every Roman perfume contained the same ingredients. The University of Colorado Boulder’s Classics catalogue, summarizing Pliny, also names saffron, marjoram, and roses among popular scents.

How did Romans use perfume?
Scented oils and ointments were applied to the body as part of grooming. The University of Colorado Boulder’s Classics catalogue describes use by men and women, including application on waking and again after bathing. Perfume was also used in honors for the dead, according to Pliny.
Pliny reports that cinnamon unguent cost 35 to 300 denarii per pound. That is a price range from his first-century CE account, not a modern valuation; it cannot be translated directly into present-day purchasing power from this figure alone.

What were unguentaria, and what did they contain?
An unguentarium was a small vessel associated with scented oil, perfume, and body lotion. The Acropolis Museum’s record for a first-century CE clay unguentarium notes that vessels of this kind could also hold or transport other liquids and solids, including honey, mastic, and spices. The vessel type therefore indicates possible uses, not definitive proof that a particular example contained perfume.

What Roman perfume tells us about luxury and everyday life
Pliny criticized perfume as an especially superfluous luxury, contrasting its fleeting scent with valuables or clothing that could last or be passed on. The RD Milns Antiquities Museum quotes his judgment: “Perfume is a luxury item of the most superfluous type: for pearls and jewels nevertheless are passed on to an heir, and clothes last for some time, but perfumes lose their scent immediately and decay within the same hour they are applied.”

Such criticism is evidence of a Roman debate about luxury, not a neutral account of what everyone did. A University of Queensland museum exhibition notes that surviving Roman authors can tell us more about practices they condemned than about ordinary routines. Literary recipes and moral judgments should therefore be read alongside the more limited evidence of objects: a vessel can show how a product might be stored or carried, but not by itself who used it or what it held.
