CAPTCHAs have not disappeared, but they are no longer the only way to screen automated traffic. Many current systems assess browser and request signals in the background, then show a challenge only when activity looks risky. For website owners, the practical replacement is usually layered bot detection—not one universal new puzzle. Passkeys and privacy-preserving tokens can help in specific situations, but they solve different problems.
What “CAPTCHAs are dead” really means
The phrase is shorthand for a change in how websites verify visitors, not a claim that CAPTCHA challenges are gone. Google’s reCAPTCHA documentation, reviewed October 7, 2026, still describes checkbox keys that may trigger a challenge and policy-based keys that do so deterministically. It also describes score-based keys that do not trigger a CAPTCHA by default. All three return a score that a site operator can use to decide what to do.
Instead of making every visitor solve a puzzle, a site can combine signals about a request or browser, allow ordinary traffic through, and challenge or block selected activity. A visual CAPTCHA remains one possible escalation when the available evidence is uncertain or the risk warrants it.

Which technologies can replace or reduce CAPTCHA challenges?
| Option | What it is for | What a visitor may experience | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Risk-based bot checks, including Turnstile or reCAPTCHA scores | Assess automated or suspicious requests to a site | Often no visible puzzle; a challenge may still appear depending on the service and site policy | Provider descriptions explain product behavior, not independent comparative effectiveness. |
| Privacy Pass and related tokens | Let a client present a privacy-preserving claim to an origin | May reduce challenges in supported contexts | Support is not universal, and a token does not guarantee that every request avoids a challenge. |
| Cryptographic Attestation of Personhood (CAP) | Offer an authenticator-based proof-of-personhood path | Touch or unlock a compatible security key or device authenticator; a CAPTCHA fallback may be needed | Compatibility depends on the authenticator, browser, and device. |
| Passkeys | Authenticate a person to a particular account on a site or app | Unlock a credential using a device PIN, pattern, fingerprint, or face recognition | A passkey is not, by itself, a general test that an anonymous visitor is human or that a form submission is not automated. |
Invisible and risk-based checks
Cloudflare describes Turnstile as using small, non-interactive JavaScript challenges to collect signals about a visitor or browser. Its listed techniques include proof-of-work, proof-of-space, web API probing, browser quirks, and human behavior. The service adjusts challenge difficulty with the aim of avoiding a visible or interactive puzzle. Cloudflare says Turnstile can be embedded on a website without routing all of its traffic through Cloudflare. Those are the provider’s product descriptions, not an independent effectiveness comparison.

Google’s documented reCAPTCHA options show that a CAPTCHA and risk scoring can coexist. Score-based keys do not prompt with a CAPTCHA by default; checkbox keys may produce a challenge, while policy-based keys are documented as triggering challenges deterministically. The site operator uses the returned score to determine an appropriate response. Google also notes limitations of CAPTCHA challenges, including friction, accessibility concerns, advances in computer vision and machine intelligence, and paid challenge-solving services.
Service-side bot management
A CAPTCHA widget is only one possible part of bot defense. Cloudflare describes a layered system that can use request-pattern heuristics, optional invisible JavaScript detection for headless browsers and malicious fingerprints, and machine learning on plans that include it. Its documentation gives the ML Bot Score a range of 1 to 99 and says which detection engines are available depends on plan. That range is a product scale, not an independently measured success rate.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
This distinction matters: a site can assess traffic and apply a policy without asking every visitor to complete the same challenge. The right response might be to allow a request, require another check, or block it, depending on the site’s risk rules.
Privacy-preserving tokens
Cloudflare’s Privacy Pass documentation describes tokens that let a client prove a claim to a website without revealing unrelated information. It says tokens can be redeemed later without revealing identity or linking activity, and identifies Privacy Pass as one signal used in Turnstile’s challenge decision. The documentation also says Apple Private Access Tokens can automatically reduce CAPTCHA prompts on participating websites for supported devices running iOS 16 or later. These mechanisms may reduce prompts in supported circumstances; they do not ensure that every site or request will be challenge-free.

Cryptographic Attestation of Personhood
Cloudflare’s CAP lets a visitor use a hardware key or platform authenticator instead of solving a puzzle. Its documentation lists FIDO Metadata Service security keys and platform authenticators such as Touch ID, Face ID, Android fingerprint readers, and Windows Hello. Availability depends on documented browser and device compatibility. Cloudflare says its zero-knowledge path is incompatible with Apple platform authenticators, which can fall back to basic CAP.
Cloudflare says it stores the key manufacturer and batch identifier for verification. That is a description of Cloudflare’s implementation, not a universal property of hardware attestation. If a visitor does not have a suitable authenticator, the documented fallback can be a regular CAPTCHA. A site using this option therefore still needs to consider people who cannot or do not want to use the supported device path.

Passkeys: account authentication, not bot screening
Google describes passkeys as public-key credentials bound to a particular website or app. A device PIN, pattern, fingerprint, or face recognition can unlock one. Google says biometric material stays on the user’s device and passkeys are not reused across sites as tracking vectors. This makes passkeys relevant to replacing passwords or phishing-prone sign-in factors, but they do not replace a request-level bot check on an anonymous form or prove that every visitor is human.

- Friction and accessibility: Will ordinary visitors get through silently, solve a puzzle, or need to operate an authenticator? Google flags accessibility concerns with CAPTCHA challenges; CAP requires an available compatible authenticator or fallback.
- Privacy and data processing: Identify which browser or request signals are processed and stored. Attribute privacy claims to the relevant provider or protocol: Turnstile and CAP describe Cloudflare’s practices, while Privacy Pass is designed for unlinkable token redemption.
- Threat model and escalation: Decide whether the goal is to screen requests, protect a login or checkout action, assess a session, or establish account control. Bot checks assess traffic; passkeys authenticate to an account.
- Coverage and fallback: Check supported browsers, operating systems, authenticators, accessibility needs, and the path for visitors whose signals are unavailable or ambiguous. CAP documents compatibility limits and a CAPTCHA fallback.
- Implementation scope: Determine whether deployment requires client-side JavaScript, server-side token verification, changes to an edge or CDN setup, or an authentication-flow change. Turnstile can be embedded without routing all traffic through Cloudflare, but a reCAPTCHA v2 migration still requires client and server updates.
- Plan constraints: Confirm current availability before choosing. Cloudflare says its bot-detection engines depend on plan; the documentation reviewed here does not establish a cross-provider price comparison.
What changes when migrating from reCAPTCHA v2?
Cloudflare’s migration guide describes compatibility-mode migration up to reCAPTCHA v2. It is not a zero-change swap: the site owner needs a Turnstile sitekey and secret, must update the client script and site key, and must change the server-side Siteverify endpoint. The guide’s stated scope should not be assumed to cover every legacy reCAPTCHA version.
- Create the Turnstile credentials: Obtain a sitekey and secret for the site.
- Update the client integration: Replace the reCAPTCHA v2 client script and site key with the Turnstile integration.
- Update server-side verification: Change the verification request to use Turnstile’s Siteverify endpoint and handle its result in the application.
- Test the protected action and fallback: Verify the full client-to-server flow, including how the site responds when verification fails or a visitor cannot complete a challenge.
Because product features, compatibility, migration steps, and plan availability can change, confirm the current provider documentation and test the integration in the target site before deployment.
Practical takeaway for site owners
Start with the specific abuse you need to reduce, not with a search for a single CAPTCHA replacement. For general traffic screening, evaluate risk-based bot checks and decide what happens at each risk level. Use passkeys for account sign-in rather than as a substitute for anonymous-traffic screening. Consider tokens or authenticator-based proof only where their privacy, compatibility, and fallback characteristics fit the visitor experience you need to support.
