Your browser resolves google.com to an IP address, establishes or reuses a connection, negotiates a secure HTTP protocol, requests the page, and processes the response. The exact DNS route, server, and protocol depend on your browser, device, network, and Google’s service configuration; the address alone does not reveal them.

1. The browser starts a navigation

When you submit google.com, the browser treats it as a request to navigate to a website. In Chromium, requests are handled by the browser’s network service, and one URL request can follow redirects before it reaches a final response or ends in an error or cancellation. A redirect means the initial address is not necessarily the address that ultimately supplies the page.

2. The device resolves the hostname

Before it can connect, the client needs an IP address associated with the fully qualified domain name. As Google’s Chrome Enterprise explanation of an HTTP request puts it, “The device must resolve fully qualified domain names (FQDN) to an IP address.”

That explanation describes the goal, not one universal DNS method. The device or browser may use a configured resolver, and DNS can be cached. The client-to-resolver exchange can use conventional DNS or encrypted DNS such as DNS over HTTPS (DoH) or DNS over TLS (DoT), depending on configuration. Encryption on that exchange does not encrypt every later network hop or conceal all browsing information from every party.

3. The browser establishes or reuses a connection

If there is no suitable existing connection, the browser must establish one to a destination address. A basic example is a TCP handshake followed by an HTTP request. That is a useful starting model, not a guarantee that every modern visit uses TCP: HTTP/2 uses TCP, while HTTP/3 uses QUIC over UDP. Both can multiplex multiple requests and responses over a connection.

Protocol Transport What to understand
HTTP/2 TCP Can multiplex requests and responses on a connection.
HTTP/3 QUIC over UDP Can also multiplex requests and responses. Under RFC 9114, HTTP/3 uses QUIC version 1, which uses TLS 1.3 or later.

A browser may reuse a connection instead of making a new one. It may also attempt HTTP/3 when that option is available and use a TCP-based HTTP version if QUIC connectivity fails. Availability and fallback depend on client and network conditions; entering Google.com does not guarantee a particular protocol.

4. HTTPS protects and authenticates the exchange

For an HTTPS navigation, the client checks that the server’s certificate is acceptable for the requested origin. The secure connection protects the exchange between client and server, but the browser still needs to resolve the name and reach a destination through the network. Certificate validation and encrypted transport do not, by themselves, identify the particular server or route used for a visit.

5. The browser sends a request and receives a response

Once it can communicate with the destination, the client sends an HTTP request for the resource. A simple illustration is an HTTP GET. The server returns an HTTP response with content or instructions such as a redirect. If redirects occur, the browser follows them as part of completing the navigation, subject to errors or cancellation.

6. The browser processes the response

The browser processes the response and renders the resulting page for display. This is the general browser sequence; it does not describe a measured, live trace of a particular Google.com visit. The exact content and handling can vary with the response and the browser’s state.

Why the URL cannot tell you the exact route

The same address can lead to different DNS answers, destination addresses, network routes, and server-side handling. Relevant variables include DNS caching and resolver configuration, the browser and operating system, whether a connection is already open, network support for QUIC, and service configuration. Google Cloud documentation describes how its load balancers can advertise HTTP/3 using Alt-Svc and fall back, but that is an example of load-balancer behavior—not evidence of Google Search’s exact setup.

Google’s API documentation says connections to Google APIs are almost always terminated by Google Front End (GFE) proxies on behalf of server processes. That statement concerns Google APIs; it does not establish which IP address, point of presence, cache, route, protocol, or backend handled a particular Google Search visit. Without a trace of that visit, those details cannot be inferred from google.com alone.
