RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a messaging standard that adds features such as high-resolution photo sharing, typing indicators, and read receipts to conversations. It uses mobile data or Wi-Fi, but only works when the messaging apps and services on both ends support and enable it. If an RCS message cannot be delivered—or RCS is unavailable—the conversation may switch to SMS/MMS. That changes how the message travels, which features are available, and whether it is end-to-end encrypted.
What RCS messaging is
RCS is an industry-standard messaging protocol, not a separate messaging app. Different messaging apps and service providers can support it. Google says its RCS service can interoperate with users on other RCS providers, though actual availability and features depend on the providers, carriers, region, and devices involved. Google explains RCS chats and their features.
RCS is designed to make everyday messaging more capable than basic SMS and MMS. Supported features can include sharing files and high-resolution photos, seeing when someone is typing, and receiving read receipts. These features are not guaranteed in every RCS conversation.

RCS messages use an internet connection, either mobile data or Wi-Fi. In Google’s implementation, messages travel through Google’s RCS infrastructure and can be routed to a recipient whose provider also supports RCS. SMS and MMS, by contrast, are delivered through the mobile carrier.

Both people having smartphones is not enough to ensure a conversation uses RCS. The messaging app and service must support RCS, it must be available through the relevant providers, and participants must have it enabled. Google says its system checks contacts for RCS availability when a user enables RCS and when a message is sent. Google also states that everyone in a conversation must have RCS chats turned on; otherwise, messages can be sent as SMS/MMS.
Check the message type in Google Messages
In Google Messages, the compose-bar label indicates the type of message being sent: “RCS message” means RCS, while “Text message” means carrier SMS/MMS. Other messaging apps may use different labels or controls.

RCS compared with SMS and MMS
| What changes | RCS | SMS/MMS |
|---|---|---|
| How messages travel | Over mobile data or Wi-Fi through an RCS service; availability depends on compatible, enabled apps and providers. | Through the mobile carrier. |
| Media and chat features | Can support file and high-resolution photo sharing, typing indicators, and read receipts; feature availability can vary. | Do not assume RCS-only features, such as typing indicators and read receipts, will work. Google says those indicators do not work with recipients who lack RCS chats. |
| End-to-end encryption | Available in eligible Google Messages RCS chats. Apple says RCS encryption depends on whether all participants’ carriers support it. | Not end-to-end encrypted, according to Google Messages Help. |
| What happens if delivery fails | The app or network may retry or use a fallback, depending on the implementation. | A fallback message travels as SMS/MMS rather than RCS, so RCS features and encryption do not carry over. |
What happens when an RCS chat falls back to SMS/MMS
Fallback means the message is sent through SMS or MMS instead of RCS. It is a change in delivery method, not proof that the recipient has permanently stopped using RCS. The reason might be that RCS is unavailable or that an RCS message could not be delivered; there is no single fallback trigger or user-interface flow that applies to every app, carrier, and device.
In Google Messages, an undelivered message can be switched manually
Google Messages continually tries to deliver unsent messages. For an undelivered RCS message, the user can choose “Switch to text (SMS/MMS).” Google warns that messages sent as SMS/MMS are not end-to-end encrypted. See Google’s instructions for controlling message delivery.

RCS features may no longer apply
Once a message goes as SMS/MMS, do not expect RCS-only signals such as typing indicators or read receipts. Media handling can also differ, so do not assume that high-resolution sharing will behave the same way as it does over RCS. The exact result depends on the messaging app and carrier.
Encryption can stop until eligible RCS resumes
Google says SMS/MMS messages are not end-to-end encrypted. In Google Messages’ documented encrypted-chat scenario, losing or disabling RCS, switching to a new phone or operating system, or losing data or Wi-Fi can make end-to-end encryption unavailable or lead to an SMS downgrade. If both participants regain RCS and remain eligible Google Messages users, the conversation can return to end-to-end encrypted RCS. Other providers may have different conditions. See Google’s explanation of RCS chat security.

Some systems may keep sending SMS after the first fallback
The GSMA’s RCS Universal Profile Service Definition Document, version 3.1 (August 2025), describes network and client fallback and specifies SMS latching: after fallback, subsequent messages remain SMS until RCS availability is confirmed. That describes behavior in the profile; it is not a guarantee that every app implements the same behavior or presents the same controls. The profile is available in the GSMA Universal Profile materials.
Why an RCS conversation might not be available
RCS requires support and availability across the services involved, as well as RCS being enabled for participants. Google notes that availability varies by carrier and region. Apple likewise describes RCS support and encryption as dependent on platform and carrier conditions. A conversation may therefore use SMS/MMS even when both people have phones that could otherwise support RCS.

Google Messages describes Google’s service and controls; Apple’s guidance applies to Apple’s platform; and the GSMA document defines profile behavior. For that reason, do not treat a label, fallback setting, encryption status, or automatic-switching rule in one app as universal. Apple’s current overview is at Apple Support: About RCS messaging.
