India’s Reserve Bank introduced the .bank.in domain as a dedicated internet address space for banks, with the aim of strengthening cybersecurity and public confidence in digital banking and payments. RBI set October 31, 2025, as the deadline for specified banks to migrate their existing domains; that date has passed, but the circular does not report how many banks completed the move or whether fraud declined.
What is the .bank.in domain?
.bank.in is a dedicated domain for banks in India. RBI said the initiative was intended to address increasing instances of digital-payment fraud and to strengthen trust in digital banking and payment systems. It is a domain and migration initiative directed at banks, not a consumer-facing guarantee that every site using the suffix is safe.
RBI first referred to the initiative in its February 7, 2025, Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies, titled “Enhancing Trust in the Financial Sector through ‘bank.in’ and ‘fin.in’ domains.” The operational instructions followed in RBI circular RBI/2025-26/28, issued April 22, 2025. Read the RBI circular.
Which banks did RBI direct to migrate?
The April circular addressed four categories of banks:
#1 Best Overall
- Commercial banks
- Primary urban co-operative banks
- State co-operative banks
- District central co-operative banks
RBI advised these banks to migrate their existing domains to .bank.in.
Who manages registration, and how was migration to work?
RBI named the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) as the exclusive registrar to operationalize .bank.in. The circular says IDRBT was authorized by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Banks were directed to contact IDRBT to begin registration; IDRBT would guide them through the application and migration process.
The contact address given in the circular is sahyog@idrbt.ac.in.
When was the migration deadline?
RBI issued its circular on April 22, 2025, and advised banks to start migrating as soon as possible and finish no later than October 31, 2025. That deadline is now historical. The circular does not establish whether every covered bank met it, so the date should not be taken as proof of universal migration.

Does .bank.in prevent online banking fraud?
RBI described the policy’s intended benefit, not a measured result. The circular says: “This initiative is aimed at strengthening the cybersecurity framework and enhancing public confidence in digital banking and payment systems.” It does not report a migration-completion count or a measured change in digital-payment fraud.
Nor does the circular say that the suffix alone guarantees a website is safe, certifies every page a customer might encounter, or makes phishing impossible. Treat .bank.in as part of RBI’s domain initiative—not as a standalone safety test. The circular is addressed to banks and does not provide a consumer verification checklist.
