Qualcomm Technologies, ZTE and China Mobile demonstrated a working 5G NR data connection between equipment from two different vendors on 15 November 2017. The controlled test used a pre-commercial ZTE base station and a Qualcomm sub-6 GHz user-equipment prototype, operating at 3.5 GHz with 100 MHz bandwidth and based on 3GPP Release 15. It showed multi-vendor interoperability—not a measured speed record or a consumer-ready 5G service.

What did the three companies demonstrate?

At China Mobile’s 5G Joint Innovation Center, the companies connected a ZTE 5G NR pre-commercial base station with Qualcomm Technologies’ sub-6 GHz UE prototype. A UE, or user equipment, is the device-side radio hardware that communicates with a mobile base station. The successful data connection showed that equipment made by different vendors could interoperate in this test setup.

Qualcomm called it the “world’s first” end-to-end 5G NR interoperable data connection. That is the participating companies’ characterization; the cited announcements do not include an independent assessment of the ranking. Qualcomm’s account of the test is available in its 15 November 2017 announcement.

What did interoperability mean in this test?

Interoperability here means the ZTE base station and Qualcomm UE prototype established a data connection despite coming from different vendors. That is a distinct milestone from an end-to-end demonstration in which a single vendor supplies both sides of the connection. Qualcomm’s December 2017 retrospective drew that distinction.

T-Mobile 5G Gateway & Wi-Fi Router Modem Kit, Dual-Band WiFi-7 No Contract
  • 5G High-Speed Internet Gateway Designed for fast and stable connectivity using T-Mobile 5G network
  • Model G5AR-1 Official T-Mobile gateway device
  • Dual-Band WiFi Support Provides reliable wireless connections for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Wi-Fi 7
  • Wide Device Compatibility Works with PCs, smart TVs, smartphones, gaming consoles, and smart home devices

The result was a controlled demonstration under China Mobile’s guidelines. It established that the particular pre-commercial hardware in the setup could connect; it did not establish that every vendor’s equipment would interoperate or that the system was ready for deployment at commercial scale.

What radio technology and parameters were involved?

  • Standard basis: 3GPP Release 15 5G NR, the 5G New Radio specification framework cited in the announcement.
  • Frequency band: 3.5 GHz.
  • Bandwidth: 100 MHz.
  • Equipment: a ZTE pre-commercial base station and Qualcomm Technologies’ sub-6 GHz UE prototype.

Qualcomm said the system followed the Release 15 5G NR layer 1 framework, including scalable OFDM numerology, advanced channel coding and modulation schemes, and a low-latency self-contained slot structure. The companies’ announcement describes these elements as part of the demonstration system.

Did the test publish a speed or latency result?

No measured peak data rate or latency figure was reported in the cited announcement. Qualcomm described the system as designed to achieve multi-gigabit peak data rates and lower air-interface latency than 4G, but those were design objectives—not published measurements from this demonstration. The announcement also does not state test duration or a detailed measurement method, so it cannot support a specific speed or latency claim.

How did the test fit into the 5G timeline?

In February 2017, Qualcomm Technologies, ZTE and China Mobile announced plans for 3.5 GHz interoperability testing and over-the-air trials aligned with the developing 3GPP Release 15 specification. The November announcement reported the completed interoperable data connection. In December, Qualcomm presented it as part of the path toward standard-compliant field trials and later commercial launches. Those launch expectations reflected the companies’ outlook in 2017; they should not be read as current forecasts.

What the milestone did—and did not—show

It showed It did not show
A data connection between a ZTE base station and a Qualcomm UE prototype from different vendors. A commercial network launch, broad device compatibility or consumer availability.
A demonstration based on 3GPP Release 15 at 3.5 GHz with 100 MHz bandwidth. A measured throughput or latency result; none was reported in the cited announcement.
Progress from standards work toward multi-vendor testing, in a controlled setting. That the system had been proven at commercial scale or that the “world’s first” claim was independently verified.
