A clear-sky CNES Pléiades stereo acquisition captured the Langtang Lirung landslide source area on 28 September 2026, more than a month after the disaster on 26 August. The CESBIO / CNRS visualization identifies a scar near the glacier and large sediment deposits in the proglacial valley. The stereo view can support three-dimensional terrain analysis, but it is a post-event observation—not a record of the collapse as it happened.
What the Pléiades view shows
Simon Gascoin’s CESBIO / CNRS post describes the Pléiades imagery as showing the landslide scar near the glacier and substantial sediment deposits in the proglacial valley. The image location is given as 28.29°N, 85.52°E. These are visual interpretations of the captured scene; the post does not report measured scar dimensions, deposit volume, or a quantitative runout analysis. CESBIO / CNRS, 1 October 2026.
CNES Pléiades obtained the clear-sky view on 28 September, after multiple attempts. Kristen Cook and Étienne Berthier led the ongoing acquisition request under CIEST2 to provide scientific insight into the event. The post credits the imagery “Pléiades © CNES 2026 Distribution Airbus DS”; that credit is not an open-reuse license.

Why stereoscopic imagery is useful
A stereo acquisition observes the same terrain from different viewing angles. CESBIO says this geometry enables generation of a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) and a geometrically accurate orthorectified image. A DEM represents terrain elevation; orthorectification corrects geometric distortions so image features align more accurately with their ground positions. Together, these products can help researchers examine the altered terrain in three dimensions and relate features to mapped locations.

- STRIKING SATELLITE ARTWORK: Features a breathtaking night-view of the USA, with glowing golden-amber city lights contrasting against a deep navy blue background.
- EASY TO HANG: Gallery-wrapped canvas stretched over a wood frame, with the image continuing around the sides for a clean, frameless look. Hanging hardware is included in a separate pouch and attaches to the back of the frame in minutes.
- PREMIUM PRINT QUALITY: Archival-quality, fade-resistant inks deliver exceptional color accuracy, keeping the vivid golden lights and deep dark tones sharp for years.
- SIZE AND ORIENTATION: Landscape-oriented rectangular canvas measuring 30 x 20 inches, making it an eye-catching focal point for any room.
- VERSATILE DECOR: Perfect for home offices, living rooms, bedrooms, and commercial spaces, complementing modern, contemporary, industrial, and transitional interior styles.
The post includes 3D visualizations of panchromatic imagery. It does not state the image’s numeric spatial resolution or the DEM’s final accuracy, so those values cannot be inferred from the “high-resolution” description.
How Pléiades fits the earlier satellite record
The Pléiades scene is distinct from satellite observations ESA used to establish before-and-after context. Those earlier images help place the event in time; the later Pléiades stereo acquisition provides a detailed post-event view of the source area.

| Sentinel-2 | 12 and 27 August 2026 | Before-and-after optical context around the 26 August event. |
| Landsat-9 and Sentinel-2 comparison | Landsat-9 on 26 August, approximately two hours after the collapse; Sentinel-2 on 24 August | ESA’s shortwave-infrared comparison. ESA notes these channels can help distinguish water and ice from clouds in a frequently cloud-covered mountainous area. |

ESA reports that the 26 August flash flood and debris avalanche followed a rapid slope failure associated with a glacier collapse on Langtang Lirung, in Langtang National Park. Water, ice, and debris travelled nearly 100 km downstream, affecting infrastructure along the Lende Kholā and Trishuli valleys. The International Charter Space and Major Disasters and Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service were activated to provide imagery and geospatial information for response. European Space Agency, 31 August 2026.
What the pre-event imagery does—and does not—establish
The Pléiades acquisition came after the landslide, so it cannot by itself establish whether warning signs were visible beforehand. In a separate analysis of Planet Labs imagery dated 12 and 25 August, Dave Petley reported little obvious change on first inspection. He noted possible movement of ice near the crown and increased midslope rockfall, while cautioning that these changes may be difficult to distinguish from ordinary background activity. That evidence does not establish a reliable warning signal, nor does it prove that no precursors existed. Eos / American Geophysical Union, 1 October 2026.

A separate EarthArXiv listing describes a preprint analyzing Sentinel-1 radar backscatter and reporting no detectable precursor before the event. It is preliminary and not peer reviewed; radar backscatter analysis is different from Petley’s inspection of optical Planet Labs images. Neither finding should be treated as a definitive answer to whether the slope showed detectable precursors. EarthArXiv preprint listing.

The post-event stereo scene gives researchers a basis for producing terrain data and examining the scar and valley deposits in a geometrically informed way. It is a visualization and acquisition, not itself a published final inventory, measured landslide volume, or quantitative assessment of the event. Reproducing its frames or animations requires checking current rights: CESBIO’s credit line identifies CNES and Airbus DS distribution, not permission for unrestricted reuse.
