People who run their own file infrastructure often describe the same bargain: more control over files and costs, in exchange for setup, upkeep, and responsibility when something breaks. The candid accounts are not a survey of all users, but they show why a person can value a NAS or self-hosted service and still find it tiring to manage.

Why self-host a file service—and why resent it?

In a June 2026 discussion in Reddit’s r/homelab, one TrueNAS user described buying a low-power computer and a three-drive array as preferable to accumulating subscription fees, family-sharing costs, and charges that rise with use. The same person found the administration wearing: creating datasets and service accounts, managing credentials, using SSH, and configuring file-system mounts.

That is the ownership trade-off in miniature. The owner gets more say over where files live and who can access them, but also takes on the work of operating the system. These are that participant’s stated motivations, not a measured comparison of total costs or security.

What does “it just works” mean in practice?

It means the service stays out of the way until a person needs it. One commenter in the same thread said that when a service works quietly, it is easy to appreciate; when it does not, using it becomes miserable. Other contributors described a different arc: a difficult initial setup followed by smooth operation.

Those mixed experiences matter. A Synology NAS struck one participant as “a nice balance” that avoided taking on too much complexity. Other commenters described frustration or distrust around a long-running Nextcloud installation or upgrades. These accounts illustrate different experiences, not a universal verdict on Synology, Nextcloud, or self-hosting.

What work comes with running the system?

Self-hosting is not only a hardware decision. The routine work described in these discussions includes:

  • Keeping network and remote-access settings understandable enough to maintain.
  • Checking that synchronization and access behave as expected across devices.

A 2024 discussion in Reddit’s r/selfhosted also reflects a practical lesson for newcomers: keep the setup manageable and plan how files will be recovered, rather than treating initial installation as the whole project.

How do people decide what not to self-host?

Outsourcing some services can be a deliberate choice, not a retreat from self-hosting. In a 2026 r/homelab discussion, the opening poster said they kept certain services outside their home setup because they wanted them to remain stable and accessible if something went wrong locally.

Other commenters were comfortable syncing an encrypted password file through self-hosted storage; one said they had used that arrangement for years without difficulty. The useful question is not whether every service belongs at home, but which files or functions the owner wants to control directly and which are worth delegating for dependable access. The discussion reflects personal priorities, not an independent security audit of those arrangements.

Why RAID is not the same as backup

Multiple drives can help a storage system continue operating when a drive fails, but redundancy alone does not ensure that a file can be recovered after deletion, damage, or another failure. In a 2025 r/selfhosted thread about keeping a setup from failing, contributors emphasized having a backup strategy, keeping copies in different places, and testing recovery. One commenter put the distinction plainly: RAID is not a backup.

Some participants described spreading copies among NAS devices, a server, and cloud storage. A recurring practical recommendation was to test the restore process, not merely assume that a backup exists. These are community recommendations rather than a formal standard, but they focus on the important outcome: being able to get files back.

How does the conversation change in business settings?

Home-lab accounts focus on personal control and maintenance; enterprise discussions add coordination across teams. Nasuni’s vendor-published The Era of Hybrid Cloud Storage – 2025 Edition identifies file synchronization as the second biggest challenge in managing file infrastructure, after security, citing the need to help teams collaborate effectively. That ranking is Nasuni’s report, not an independently established industry consensus.

The same report says 98% of firms say AI is a priority. Because this is a vendor-published figure and its survey methodology is not established here, it should not be treated as a broad benchmark for businesses. Its relevance to file infrastructure is the wider context: organizations must consider not just where files are stored, but how people access and work with them.

What the candid accounts do—and do not—show

These discussions are self-selected contributions, mostly from self-hosting and homelab communities. They are useful for hearing how participants describe the ownership bargain, the maintenance burden, and their choices about backups or outsourced services. They cannot establish what most households, businesses, or IT professionals think, nor prove that one product or architecture is best.
