“Google trade show” is not established as the official name of a specific Google event. The phrase may refer to Google I/O, a Google-hosted technology event, or an expo-style showcase within a larger event. Google describes I/O as its annual developer conference; Google Cloud Next, by contrast, can include a dedicated showcase and expo floor.
What does “Google trade show” mean?
In plain language, a trade show is an event organized around exhibitors presenting products or services to attendees. The phrase “Google trade show” is ambiguous: it could mean a trade show where Google exhibits, a Google event that includes demonstrations, or an exhibition area within a larger conference. The official Google sources cited here do not identify “Google Trade Show” as the proper name of one event.
If someone uses the phrase without more context, ask which event they mean. The distinction matters because a conference may have booths or product demonstrations without being a trade show as a whole.
Is Google I/O a trade show?
Google calls Google I/O its annual developer conference. Its purpose includes sharing updates about Google platforms, products and future innovations, and its program can include keynotes, conversations and product demos. That makes I/O a developer conference, even when parts of the event have an exhibition-like feel. Google’s history of I/O explains how the event got its name and developed.

Google’s 2026 announcement described that edition as taking place May 19–20, 2026, at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View and online, with keynotes, fireside chats and product demos. Those dates have passed; they describe the 2026 edition, not an upcoming event. Check Google’s I/O 2026 announcement for that edition’s details.
How is a conference different from a trade show?
| Aspect | Developer conference, such as Google I/O | Trade show |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Technical learning and product or platform announcements | Exhibitors present products or services; promotion and business development may be central |
| Typical program | Keynotes, sessions or conversations, and potentially demos | Exhibit floor, booths and product demonstrations |
| Likely audience | Developers and people interested in the platforms and products | Buyers, industry professionals or the general public, depending on the event |
| Format | May be in person, online or hybrid | Often organized around an exhibition; the format varies by event |
These are useful ways to distinguish event formats, not rules that every event follows. A conference can include an expo area, and an event can combine learning sessions with exhibitor-led demonstrations.

What does an expo-style Google event look like?
Google Cloud Next provides an example of an exhibition area within a larger event. Google Cloud describes its Next Showcase as an expo-floor environment with interactive demonstrations and customer and developer theaters. The showcase is a component of the event, not evidence that “Google trade show” is the official name of the whole event. See the Google Cloud Next Showcase description.
What is Google I/O Connect?
Google distinguishes I/O Connect from its main I/O conference. I/O Connect is a hands-on, in-person developer event series focused on applying I/O announcements and technology. It is therefore more precise to call it a developer event than to assume the phrase “Google trade show” refers to it. Google’s Google I/O 2024 FAQ describes the distinction.
