Start with the protections that do not require a paid service: limit unnecessary sharing of your child’s Social Security number, check whether the child has a credit file, and consider a free credit freeze if the child is under 16. If you compare paid services, look closely at which information sources they monitor, how often they check them, what activity they can miss, and what recovery support and insurance actually cover. Monitoring can help spot some signs of misuse, but it does not prevent identity theft or cover every kind of fraud.

This guidance is for families in the United States. Credit-bureau procedures and service terms can change, so follow the current instructions from each bureau and provider.

What a child identity theft service should—and should not—do

Child identity theft can involve someone using a child’s Social Security number, name, address, or birth date to seek financial accounts, loans, utilities, housing, or government benefits. Because children generally do not have credit reports, misuse may go unnoticed until a family encounters an unexpected bill, benefit denial, tax notice, or credit problem.

A paid service may monitor credit files, search other databases for identity information, provide recovery assistance, or offer an insurance policy for certain expenses. Those are distinct features, not a guarantee that every use of a child’s information will be found or resolved. A credit freeze and careful handling of personal information remain important: a freeze can make it harder to open new accounts using the child’s credit file, but it does not block every form of identity misuse.

Guard Your ID Identity Theft Protection Roller Stamp for Mail, Black
  • WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
  • HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage). A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life, so it is ready whenever the mail arrives.
  • DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
  • IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
  • SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Black roller.

What to compare before enrolling

What to check Questions to ask Why it matters
Child eligibility Does the plan accept minors? Which ages qualify, and what proof of guardianship is required? Official guidance explains ways to protect a child but does not establish any particular provider’s eligibility rules. Confirm current terms directly with the provider.
Monitoring scope Does the service monitor credit reports, other identity data, or both? Which bureaus and data sources are included? Credit monitoring and identity monitoring look for different kinds of activity, and coverage varies by service.
Check frequency and alerts How often are the sources checked? How will alerts be delivered, and what information will they contain? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends asking how often reports are checked and which bureaus are monitored.
Blind spots Which uses of a child’s information are not monitored or likely to go undetected? Credit monitoring may miss bank withdrawals and tax-refund fraud. Many identity-monitoring services may miss some government-benefit and Social Security claims.
Recovery assistance Is a case manager included? Can the service help draft letters, place freezes, or contact institutions? Are any actions extra? Services may offer different kinds of help, and a company may need formal authority to act on a customer’s behalf.
Insurance terms What expenses are covered? What is the deductible, and what exclusions or other-policy rules apply? Some policies may cover certain recovery costs, lost wages, or legal fees, but generally do not reimburse money stolen by scammers or other identity-theft financial losses.
Total cost and alternatives What is the monthly or annual fee? Is recovery assistance extra? Is a similar service available through an existing account or benefit? A bank, credit union, card provider, employer benefit, or insurer may offer services; some features may cost extra.

Understand what each service feature means

Credit monitoring

Credit monitoring checks credit reports for changes. Depending on the service, alerts may concern new accounts, credit inquiries, delinquencies, public records, or changes to personal information. Ask how many bureaus are covered, how frequently checks happen, and whether report access or credit scores cost extra. Monitoring only the credit sources named in a plan does not amount to monitoring every possible use of a child’s information.

Identity monitoring

Identity monitoring searches databases beyond credit reports for personal information or activity that could signal misuse. FTC examples include address-change requests, court or arrest records, new utility or wireless-service orders, payday-loan applications, check-cashing requests, social media, and sites used to trade stolen information. Providers differ in which databases they search and how they alert customers; ask for a specific list rather than relying on a broad label such as “identity monitoring.”

Identity theft insurance

Insurance may cover certain out-of-pocket recovery expenses, lost wages, or legal fees. It generally does not replace money stolen by a scammer or reimburse financial losses from identity theft. Another policy may pay first, so read the policy’s deductible, exclusions, and coordination rules instead of judging it by a headline coverage amount.

Take these free steps before paying for monitoring

Limit unnecessary disclosure

Before giving a school or another organization your child’s Social Security number, ask why it is required, how it will be protected, whether another identifier will work, and whether the last four digits are enough. Keep documents containing the child’s personal information in a secure place. Shred paper records before disposal, and delete personal information from an old computer or phone before discarding it.

Check whether a credit file exists

Children generally do not have credit reports. A parent or guardian can ask the three nationwide credit reporting companies to search for a minor’s file. A manual search may be needed. Be prepared to follow each bureau’s current procedure and provide documents such as the parent or guardian’s identification and proof of address, plus the child’s birth certificate and Social Security card. A guardian who is not a parent may need to show legal authority. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains the process in its guidance on checking whether a child has a credit report.

Consider a free freeze for a child under 16

A parent or guardian may request a free credit freeze for a child under 16. The minor process differs from an adult freeze and requires contacting the credit bureaus. According to the FTC’s child identity theft guidance, dated October 2024, the freeze remains in place until it is removed. A minor aged 16 or 17 may request and remove a freeze themselves. Follow each bureau’s current instructions.

Recognize warning signs and respond to suspected misuse

These signs warrant investigation, though a single notice does not by itself establish identity theft:

  • A student loan is denied because of bad credit.

If you find evidence of misuse, take practical steps with the affected organizations and credit bureaus:

  1. Contact each company where a fraudulent account was opened. Ask it to close the account and confirm in writing that the child is not liable.
  2. Contact the credit bureaus to ask that fraudulent accounts be removed from the child’s credit file.
  3. Request a credit freeze for the child if applicable.
  4. Report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov and follow its recovery guidance.

Questions to ask a provider before signing up

  • Can I enroll my child, and what age, relationship, or guardianship documentation do you require?
  • Which credit bureaus and non-credit data sources do you monitor, and how often are they checked?
  • What types of activity are outside your monitoring scope, including bank, tax, benefit, or government-related activity?
  • How are alerts delivered, and what should I do when one arrives?
  • What recovery help is included, what costs extra, and what authority must I grant the provider?
  • What does the insurance policy pay for, what is the deductible, and what losses or expenses are excluded?
  • Can I get any of these features through my bank, credit union, card provider, employer, or insurer instead?

The FTC’s identity theft guidance covers monitoring, recovery services, and insurance limits. The CFPB also explains the scope and limits of identity monitoring services.
