AI can turn an ordinary photo into a nude or sexualised image, or generate exploitative images from scratch. A fabricated image can still harm and directly victimise a child. If your child is targeted, support them without blame, report suspected exploitation to the appropriate authorities and service, and request removal from the platform where possible.
How AI-generated images can put children at risk
Generative AI can create exploitative images or manipulate an ordinary photograph so a real child appears nude or in a sexualised situation. NCMEC also describes risks that include sextortion, online enticement and material created by peers and circulated at school. The image may be fabricated, but the impact on the child is real.
UNICEF said in its 4 February 2026 statement on AI-generated sexualised images of children: “When a child’s image or identity is used, that child is directly victimised.” NCMEC describes possible harms including harassment, bullying, emotional distress, coercion and revictimization. Treat a suspected AI-created or altered image seriously rather than dismissing it as harmless because it is not an unaltered photograph.
What to do if your child is targeted
- Listen and reassure. Thank your child for telling you, make clear that they are not to blame, and focus first on their safety and emotional wellbeing.
- Keep basic details about where the content appeared. Note the platform or service, account or username, and when you found out. Do not forward or share the image. If you are unsure how to handle the content itself, ask law enforcement or the relevant reporting service for guidance.
- Report it to the platform. Use its reporting process for sexual exploitation, non-consensual imagery or child safety. The platform can address content on its own service; its removal does not necessarily remove other copies.
- Report suspected exploitation to the appropriate authorities and reporting service. In the United States, NCMEC directs reports to its CyberTipline. NCMEC says reports are processed and made available to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Outside the United States, contact the relevant national reporting service or local law enforcement; services and legal processes vary by location.
- Consider Take It Down for removal requests. NCMEC’s service can anonymously request removal of real or AI-created explicit images from participating platforms. It does not guarantee removal from every service or every copy.
- Address immediate safety concerns locally. If there is an immediate threat, coercion, or concern about a person approaching or contacting your child, contact local law enforcement or child-protection authorities.
How to respond to a school or peer incident
If the image was made or shared by students, contact appropriate school staff as well as the platform and relevant authorities. NCMEC recommends that schools have codes of conduct, incident-response plans and staff training for AI-related exploitation or abuse. Ask the school how it will limit further circulation, protect the targeted child from bullying, and respond to students involved.

How to talk with children and reduce exposure
Make disclosure feel safe
Have recurring, age-appropriate conversations about online safety and AI image misuse. Tell children they can come to you or another trusted adult if someone asks for images, threatens them, or shares an image that makes them uncomfortable. NCMEC advises adults to support a child who discloses exploitation rather than blame or shame them.
Review access to photos
Help children review privacy settings on accounts where they post or share images, and limit access to photos that could be misused. This can reduce exposure; it cannot prevent someone from copying an image that is already accessible or manipulating a photo obtained elsewhere.

Assess image-generation services carefully
There is no established ranking of image-generation services for safety with children’s photos. UNICEF warns that safeguards are uneven. Before a child or family uses a service, check:
- Age restrictions and child-access controls.
- Whether uploaded photos are retained or used to improve models.
- Safeguards against sexualised depictions of children and image-to-image misuse.
- How to report harmful output and appeal a decision.
- Geographic availability and the privacy terms that apply where you live.
Do not assume a service is safe for children’s photos just because it is popular or built into another platform. Review its current terms, privacy practices and reporting options.

What the available figures do—and do not—show
NCMEC’s figures describe reports and content recorded in its system, not the total number of affected children or incidents. The measures below have different units and may overlap, so they should not be added together or treated as a global prevalence estimate.

Separately, UNICEF’s February 2026 statement cited a modeled estimate that at least 1.2 million children across 11 countries had images manipulated into sexually explicit deepfakes in the past year. UNICEF said the estimate draws on nationally representative surveys of internet-using 12–17-year-olds and their caregivers and is modeled using population and estimated internet-use data. It is not directly comparable to NCMEC’s CyberTipline counts.

Where to report and what removal services can do
The routes serve different purposes. A platform handles content on its own service. Take It Down can make anonymous removal requests to participating platforms for real or AI-created explicit images. NCMEC’s CyberTipline receives U.S. reports of suspected exploitation and makes processed reports available to appropriate law enforcement. Local police or child-protection authorities can address immediate local safety and legal concerns.

What is known about the law and safeguards
UNICEF’s statements on legal definitions and criminalization are recommendations, not proof that every country has the same laws. Do not assume a particular legal outcome from the fact that an image is AI-generated; consult local authorities about the law where you live.
UNICEF has called for safety-by-design and robust guardrails, while warning that safeguards remain uneven. The available information does not establish that any particular image-generation service is safe for children’s photos, or provide a universal estimate of how often children are affected.
