“New tag collected” usually means your Samsung phone has detected an NFC tag and is processing the information stored on it. The notice alone does not mean your phone has been hacked or that the tag is malicious. Check for a nearby NFC card, sticker, badge, or accessory, and review any action the phone presents before opening or following it.
What “New tag collected” means
Android’s Tags app source uses “New tag collected” as the title for the screen shown after a new tag is scanned. The NFC Forum’s Cross-platform NFC Tag UX specification explains that Android can derive possible actions from records stored on a tag. Those records may represent a web link, a phone-number action, text, or a type the phone does not understand.
The wording describes tag handling; it does not identify the object that was scanned or assess whether its contents are safe. Android source strings and the NFC Forum specification explain the mechanism, but they do not establish exactly what a particular Galaxy model or software version will display.
Why it may appear when you unlock or move the phone
NFC works over a short distance. A tag or card touching or sitting close to the phone can therefore be a reasonable first thing to check, particularly if the alert appears when you unlock or move it. Possible nearby items include a badge, transit or payment card, sticker, or accessory. This is a troubleshooting inference, not a confirmed diagnosis of any individual phone.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

A tag read can be ordinary. Ezurio’s NFC guide demonstrates enabling NFC, bringing a phone near a tag, and displaying the tag’s text under the same notification heading.
What to do about a recurring notification
- Check what is near the phone. Temporarily move NFC-capable cards, badges, stickers, and accessories away from the device. See whether the alert stops during the situations that usually trigger it.
- Test with NFC turned off. Use the NFC control available in your Galaxy’s settings or Quick Settings, then observe whether the notification stops. This is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a permanent fix: NFC-dependent functions will not work while NFC is off. A Samsung Community user suggested this test, but it is community advice rather than a universal Samsung procedure.
- Look for an unknown-tag setting only if your device has one. Samsung Community advice mentions disabling “unknown tag detection,” but the suggested menu path is not confirmed as universal across Galaxy models and One UI versions. Search your phone’s settings for the term or consult Samsung Support; do not assume every device has the same option.
- Follow the app’s scan flow when using an NFC service. If the message appears during a printer, payment, access, or other NFC task, return to that service’s app and use its scan control. For example, Printix documents that Android may show “New tag collected” if a printer tag is scanned before the user selects the Printix app’s scan control.
- Review unexpected actions before proceeding. If the phone shows a URL, phone number, or other action you do not recognize, do not open it or act on it. The NFC Forum specification describes how tag records can map to actions; it does not certify the safety of a specific tag.
Does the alert mean your phone was hacked?
No conclusion like that follows from the notification alone. The available technical explanation is that the phone detected and handled an NFC tag. The message by itself is not evidence of malware or hardware failure. Avoid factory-resetting the phone or paying for repair solely because this wording appeared; first check nearby tags, test NFC, and consider what you were doing when the alert showed up.
