As of October 7, 2026, Naughty Dog and PlayStation have not announced Uncharted 5 or confirmed that Nathan Drake will return in a new game. That does not establish whether a project exists internally; it means there is no official story or game-cast information to report from the sources reviewed. If Nathan did return, Uncharted 4 points to the central story question: can he answer the call of adventure without abandoning the life he chose?
What is officially known about Uncharted 5?
Naughty Dog’s official news listing includes a 2026 post marking Uncharted 4’s anniversary, but the official Naughty Dog and PlayStation pages reviewed do not announce a fifth game, its plot, or its cast. The anniversary post is not a sequel announcement. That distinction matters: fan discussion about why another game has not been made, or whether fans want one, is not evidence of development or casting.
So any account of Nathan’s return, a new treasure hunt, or familiar characters reuniting is speculation unless and until the studio or publisher confirms it.

Why Nathan’s return would create a story dilemma
Uncharted 4 gives the clearest starting point for a hypothetical continuation. PlayStation’s official synopsis says, “Three years after his last escapade, Nathan Drake has retired from global exploration, but he still feels the overwhelming lure of adventure.” The game then brings Nathan’s brother Sam back into his life, drawing Nathan into danger again. Its setup puts family, his past, and what he is willing to sacrifice for loved ones at the center of the story. PlayStation’s Uncharted 4 page describes that existing game; it does not reveal a fifth game’s plot.

If a new game brought Nathan back, the natural dramatic tension would be the familiar pull of exploration against the quieter life and responsibilities he chose. A continuation could ask whether that impulse is still compatible with his commitments—or whether the adventure belongs to someone else. Those are possibilities drawn from the prior game’s premise, not reported story plans.
Would Nathan have to be the protagonist?
No. The series has already shown that an Uncharted adventure can put someone other than Nathan at the center. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy follows Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross, and PlayStation presents it as a standalone adventure. That precedent leaves several plausible shapes for a hypothetical fifth game:

- Nathan as the lead: A direct continuation could return him to the center of the adventure.
- Nathan in a supporting role: He could appear as a mentor, partner, or family connection while another character leads.
- A successor or separate branch: A new protagonist could carry the series forward without making Nathan the main character.
These are ways to think about the franchise’s storytelling options, not confirmed proposals. The official PlayStation Uncharted hub describes the existing games and characters, including Chloe and Nadine; it does not confirm their involvement in a future installment.

There is no confirmed cast for a new Uncharted game in the official pages reviewed. Naughty Dog’s 2026 anniversary post credits Nolan North with playing Nathan Drake across the game series, including Uncharted 4. The post says North “captured the essence of Nate from the very start of the series and continued to outdo himself with every entry through Uncharted 4.” That is praise for his performance in released games, not confirmation that he is signed on for another one. Tom Holland also played Nathan Drake, but in Sony Pictures’ 2022 film adaptation—not in a confirmed fifth game. The film and games are distinct continuities, so movie casting should not be treated as evidence about a new game’s performers. Sony Pictures’ film page covers the movie.
Sam, Sully, Elena, Chloe, and Nadine are part of the established character pool. Their prior roles make them possible subjects of fan speculation, but no official source reviewed confirms that any will appear in a fifth game.

What to look for in an eventual announcement
If Naughty Dog or PlayStation announces another game, two questions will help clarify what kind of story it is:

- Continuity: Does the story continue directly from Uncharted 4, or introduce a standalone adventure or new branch?
Until an official announcement answers those questions, there are no competing confirmed versions of the game’s story or cast to compare.

How to revisit the existing games
For a catch-up, PlayStation says Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection includes the single-player stories from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Naughty Dog’s anniversary post also points readers to the collection. It is a way to revisit the existing stories, not a prerequisite for a sequel that has not been announced. Check the official PlayStation Uncharted 4 page for collection details and availability relevant to your region and platform.
