The 51 formulas in my $5 Student Planner spreadsheet do not make it a GPA calculator. In my inspection of the workbook’s spreadsheet XML, I found that its semester result averages course percentages without weighting them by credits, and it does not convert the result to a 4.0 GPA scale. A formula count can describe what is in a workbook; it cannot, by itself, prove that advertised features work.

Where the 51 formulas are

In my September 30, 2026 account of the Student Planner audit, I reported counting formulas in the shipped workbook’s XML:

  • 40 in the Assignments sheet.
  • Two in the Time Log.
  • One in the Semester sheet’s average cell.
  • Eight repeated course-letter formulas.

That is a count of formula cells, not a measure of how many distinct features the spreadsheet implements. For example, the 40 assignment formulas repeat the same due-date calculation down a column.

Why the semester result is not a GPA

The Semester sheet’s cell F20 contains this reported formula: IFERROR(ROUND(AVERAGEIFS(E9:E16,D9:D16,">0"),2),"add courses"). Column E is labeled “Current grade %” and column D “Credits.” The formula uses a positive credit value as a condition for including a row, then averages the corresponding percentages in E9:E16. It does not multiply each grade by its credit count, so the credits filter which courses are included but do not affect their relative contribution. Nor does the formula convert the percentage result to a 4.0 GPA scale.

The distinction can change the result substantially. For a 4-credit course at 95% and a 1-credit course at 60%, a simple average is 77.5%; a credit-weighted average is 88.0%. Those figures are an illustration of the two calculation methods, not a separate workbook test.

The eight course-letter formulas translate percentages into letter grades using thresholds from A through D/F, as described in my audit. Letter labels do not make the underlying percentage average credit-weighted or turn it into a GPA.

What the other formulas do—and where their ranges stop

Assignments: due-date countdowns

The Assignments sheet has 40 copies of IF(A4="","",A4-TODAY()) in G4:G43. Each calculates the number of days between a populated date in column A and today. The workbook’s conditional-formatting rules color overdue items red and items due within three days amber. The sheet also has “Weight %” and “Grade %” columns, but I found no formula referencing either column. That means the earlier marketing language about weights was not reflected in a formula in the workbook I inspected.

Time Log: different weekly and all-time ranges

The weekly total uses SUMIFS over minutes in C4:C200 within a Monday-through-Sunday date window, then divides by 60 to express the result in hours. The all-time total instead uses SUM(C4:C500)/60. Because those ranges end on different rows, entries after row 200 can be counted in the all-time total while being omitted from the weekly total.

Semester: eight course rows

The semester average and course-letter formulas cover rows 9 through 16: eight course rows. A course entered beyond row 16 is outside those formula ranges unless the formulas are extended.

What an XML inspection establishes—and what it does not

Inspecting a workbook’s XML can reveal formula text, cell locations, and ranges. It does not establish that a formula behaves as intended in every spreadsheet application or for every combination of blank and populated cells. I did not confirm how Excel, Google Sheets, or LibreOffice handles blank values in the average range, or how a weighted replacement should treat a course that has credits but no grade.

I considered a SUMPRODUCT replacement but did not ship one: without matching criteria in both the weighted-grade numerator and the credit denominator, it would not reliably handle the same eligible courses in both parts, and I could not test a replacement. The open question is exactly how AVERAGEIFS and any weighted replacement treat blank cells in the average range, on Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice.

So the appropriate conclusion is limited: the formula text I inspected shows an unweighted percentage average for rows with positive credits, not a validated GPA calculation across spreadsheet applications. A reliable audit of behavior would also require testing representative inputs—including blank grades, credits without grades, and courses beyond the listed range—in the applications the workbook claims to support.

What changed after the mismatch

I previously described the spreadsheet as a GPA calculator and made claims about a credits-weighted average. Those claims did not match the formulas I found. I reported that I corrected the listing copy and preview images after discovering the mismatch. The Student Planner was listed as a $5 one-time digital download through Payhip, and the post also mentioned a $19 bundle; those are product details reported at publication and may change.

The post’s authorship note says it was drafted by an AI assistant working from the project’s files and command output, then read and corrected by me before publication. I am the author and seller of the spreadsheet I audited; this is a self-audit, not an independent test of a separately obtained copy. As I put it at the end of the post: “The file always answers.”

A practical check for spreadsheet makers and buyers

  1. Count formulas, but treat the count as inventory. Repeated copies can inflate the total without adding distinct capabilities.
  2. Read the formulas behind the advertised features. Check whether a “weighted” result actually uses weights in its calculation, and whether a “GPA” feature converts grades to the stated scale.
  3. Inspect ranges and conditions. Look for courses, assignments, or dates that fall outside a formula’s endpoint or fail its criteria.
  4. Test behavior in the intended spreadsheet applications. Include blank cells, incomplete rows, edge values, and entries at the boundaries of each range.
  5. Make the listing match the workbook. If a feature is not implemented or has not been validated, describe what the spreadsheet does rather than what its labels imply.

If you sell a spreadsheet, run the 51-formula count on it. If you buy one, run it too.
