Stock prices move when buy and sell orders meet, as investors respond to new information and changing conditions. Earnings and management guidance can shift expectations about a company; political or broader market events can affect it from outside. Sentiment may influence trading interest, while demand and available liquidity affect the prices at which orders execute. None of these factors guarantees whether a stock will rise or fall, or how far it will move.
How a stock price changes during the day
A stock’s quoted price reflects trading, not a fixed assessment that updates automatically whenever news appears. Buyers submit bids and sellers offer shares; transactions occur when orders meet. New information can change what investors are willing to pay or accept, while the orders currently available affect the prices at which trades can happen.
The SEC notes that a stock can be affected by events inside a company and by events outside its control, including political or market events. SEC Investor.gov: Stocks – FAQs.

How earnings and guidance can change expectations
Earnings report what happened
Public companies disclose financial results and other information through reports and announcements. An earnings release gives investors information about a reporting period; it is not, by itself, a promise about what the share price will do next. See the SEC’s overview of public companies and their disclosures.

Guidance describes management’s outlook
Guidance communicates management’s expectations and the assumptions behind them. Investors may reassess their expectations when a company issues or changes guidance. The reaction depends on how they interpret the information alongside other circumstances; a raised outlook does not guarantee a rising share price, and a lowered outlook does not guarantee a decline.
For example, Illinois Tool Works said in its July 30, 2026 earnings release that it was raising 2026 GAAP EPS guidance by $0.15 and narrowing its range to $11.35–$11.55 per share. It also raised revenue-growth guidance to 4–5%. Those are figures from one company’s release, not a general measure of how guidance affects stock prices. ITW’s SEC-filed second-quarter 2026 release.

What market sentiment can—and cannot—tell you
Market sentiment refers to how investors appear to feel or position themselves around information. Social discussion and sentiment indicators may reflect attention or opinion, but they are not proof of a company’s value or a reliable forecast of its next price move. Social posts can also be false or misleading, and emotionally driven trading can expose investors to significant risk.

Why the last-traded price may not be your execution price
The last-traded price records a previous transaction; it does not guarantee the price at which a new order will fill. A market order seeks the best available price, but the result depends on demand and available liquidity when the order reaches the market. Large orders may be filled in pieces at different prices. The SEC explains these distinctions in its order-types bulletin, updated August 18, 2026.
A practical way to examine an intraday move
When a stock moves sharply, separate the possible explanations instead of assuming one headline caused the entire change:
- Identify what became public. Check company releases and disclosures for earnings, guidance, or other company news.
- Separate results from outlook. Note what the company reported about the past period and what management said about future performance and assumptions.
- Check the wider context. Consider political or broader market events that could affect the company alongside its own news.
- Distinguish disclosure from discussion. Treat social-media claims and sentiment readings as signals to verify, not substitutes for public company information.
- Keep trading conditions in view. The last price may differ from an order’s execution price because demand and available liquidity change.
These questions help organize the evidence; they do not establish that a particular factor was decisive or that the market’s interpretation was correct. The SEC and FINRA sources cited here do not provide a universal formula for the size or direction of an earnings, guidance, or sentiment-driven move.
