At a Mumbai event, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat described dharma and rashtra—nationhood—as interdependent, and said India’s knowledge traditions could help address challenges facing the world. The remarks were reported at the 14th conference of the All India Vihar Seva Group; they record Bhagwat’s argument, not independent evidence that the traditions offer proven solutions.

Where Bhagwat made the remarks

Bhagwat spoke at the 14th conference of the All India Vihar Seva Group. The Indian Express places the event in Borivali, Mumbai; PTI described the group as a Jain youth service organisation. The remarks were reported on October 2 and 3, 2026. The Indian Express and PTI via Free Press Journal covered the address.

How he connected dharma and rashtra

Bhagwat presented dharma and the nation as mutually sustaining, rather than separate ideas. The Indian Express reported him saying: “Dharma is the purpose of the nation. It is dharma that sustains the nation. The dharma and nation are interdependent. The existence of one can be sustained only when the other exists.”

In this account, “dharma” is the principle he said gives the nation purpose and sustains it; “rashtra” refers to the nation. The reports convey his framing, but do not provide a fuller definition of either term or establish the claim as a settled historical or political conclusion.

Which world challenges he cited

Bhagwat pointed to tensions where, in his view, resolving one concern can appear to undermine another. PTI reported three examples:

  • Development and the environment: He described development as damaging the environment and environmental protection as limiting development.
  • Individual freedom and family life: He linked greater individual freedom with families breaking apart and social breakdown. This is his reported causal claim, not an independently established finding.
  • Religious faith and conflict: He raised the relationship between faith and conflict as another challenge.

PTI reported Bhagwat’s view that such dilemmas cannot be solved simply by choosing one side at the cost of the other. The event reports do not assess that proposition or identify solutions and comparative outcomes. Evaluating any proposed answer would require evidence about its effects on development, environmental protection, personal freedoms, family wellbeing and conflict, rather than relying on the speech alone.

Which traditions and texts he named

The Indian Express and PTI reported that Bhagwat referred to the following traditions and texts as part of India’s knowledge heritage:

  • Vedas and Upanishads
  • Ramayana and Mahabharata
  • Bhagavad Gita, also called the Gita
  • Jain Agamas and Tripitaka
  • Guru Granth Sahib
  • Teachings of saints

This is the list attributed to the address, not an exhaustive canon or an independent assessment of what these works teach. Bhagwat framed the heritage as relevant to challenges facing humanity and said India had shared knowledge without military conquest or forced conversion. Those are his reported claims; the event coverage does not independently evaluate them. He also described preserving and transmitting these traditions to future generations as both a social and religious responsibility.

What the reports establish—and what they do not

The available accounts are news reports, including a PTI report, rather than a complete speech transcript. The quotations above should therefore be understood as wording published by the outlets that covered the address. A full transcript or recording is not provided in those reports, and they do not independently test Bhagwat’s wider historical claims or evaluate whether the named traditions can resolve the dilemmas he described.
