“Best-of” tells you how many games a series can last—not how many games it must last. The first team to reach a majority of the possible wins advances: two wins in a best-of-three, three in a best-of-five and four in a best-of-seven. MLB currently uses all three formats: best-of-three in the Wild Card Series, best-of-five in the Division Series, and best-of-seven in the League Championship Series and World Series.

What does “best-of” mean?

A best-of series ends as soon as one team has won more than half of the maximum games. The remaining scheduled games are not played once the outcome is decided. For example, a team that wins the first three games of a best-of-five has already reached three wins, so the series ends without Games 4 and 5.

Format Wins needed to advance Maximum games MLB postseason round
Best-of-three 2 3 Wild Card Series
Best-of-five 3 5 Division Series
Best-of-seven 4 7 League Championship Series and World Series

Thus, a best-of-five lasts three, four or five games; a best-of-seven lasts four, five, six or seven. MLB’s 2026 postseason schedule marks later games “if necessary.”

How the current MLB playoff bracket works

Under MLB’s current format, 12 teams qualify—six from each league. Each league sends its three division winners and three Wild Card teams. The top two division winners in each league receive a bye into the Division Series; the other four teams play in the Wild Card Series.

  1. Wild Card Series: The No. 3 seed plays the No. 6 seed, and the No. 4 seed plays the No. 5 seed. Both matchups are best-of-three. The winners advance; the losers are eliminated.
  2. Division Series: The No. 1 seed faces the winner of the No. 4/5 matchup, and the No. 2 seed faces the winner of the No. 3/6 matchup. These matchups are best-of-five.
  3. League Championship Series: The Division Series winners in each league meet in a best-of-seven. The winner takes that league’s pennant and advances to the World Series.
  4. World Series: The American League and National League pennant winners meet in a best-of-seven. The first team to four wins becomes MLB champion.

The bracket is not reseeded after the Wild Card round: the No. 1 seed’s opponent is the 4/5 winner, while the No. 2 seed’s opponent is the 3/6 winner. MLB’s current playoff-format explainer describes the structure and matchups.

Which team hosts each game?

Home-field arrangements vary by round. A higher seed does not receive the same hosting pattern in every series.

Round Hosting pattern
Wild Card Series The higher seed hosts every game.
Division Series The higher seed hosts Games 1, 2 and, if necessary, Game 5; the pattern is 2-2-1.
League Championship Series The higher remaining seed hosts Games 1 and 2, and, if necessary, Games 6 and 7.
World Series Home field goes to the pennant winner with the better regular-season record.

For the Division Series, 2-2-1 means the higher seed hosts the first two games, the other team hosts the next two, and the higher seed hosts Game 5 if it is needed. MLB’s format explainer identifies this as the best-of-five home-field arrangement.

How the Wild Card format has changed

The present structure is not the format MLB used throughout the Wild Card era. MLB’s Wild Card history records these key changes:

  • The first Wild Card season was 1995.
  • A one-game Wild Card playoff was introduced in 2012.
  • In 2022, MLB added a third Wild Card team per league and replaced the single-game round with the best-of-three Wild Card Series.
  • The 2020 postseason used an expanded, pandemic-era best-of-three opening round. That was distinct from the regular format that returned in 2021.

When comparing playoff formats across seasons, check the year: “Wild Card” has referred to different structures, including a single elimination game and a three-game series.
