Meta says its Muse AI agent stores files and memories in a dedicated cloud virtual machine (VM) for each user. That memory can include details about other people, such as friends’ dietary restrictions. Separately, a journalist reported that Muse unexpectedly suggested an article tied to a private Messages conversation. Meta disputes the account’s explanation, and the available reporting does not establish how Muse obtained the information.
What does Muse remember about you and other people?
Meta launched Muse on September 8, 2026, describing it as a personal AI agent that can work across connected apps, run tasks in the background, and remember details to make suggestions. Meta’s example is practical but privacy-relevant: Muse can turn a saved recipe reel into a grocery list and remember dinner guests’ dietary restrictions. That means information about friends or family may become part of the context Muse uses when a user shares it or connects relevant sources; it does not establish that Muse independently creates files on everyone a user knows. Meta says each user’s dedicated VM is the “system of record” for information put into Muse. Files, work Muse generates, memory, and credentials for connected services are stored in that VM. Meta calls it the user’s own computer, but it is cloud-hosted; that phrase does not mean the information is stored only on a device the user physically possesses. Meta also says limited data leaves the VM for inference and telemetry. Meta’s Muse security post
Can Muse read private Messages without permission?
On September 30, TechCrunch reported on Inc. columnist Jason Aten’s account that Muse suggested an article based on a private Messages conversation he said he had not authorized it to read. Aten said Full Disk Access was off. TechCrunch quoted Meta VP of Communications Andy Stone saying the Mac app’s Messages integration is opt-in and requires both Full Disk Access and enabling the Messages connector: “It can’t read your Messages unless you do this.” TechCrunch’s account of the incident and Meta’s response

TechCrunch also reported that Meta executive David Singleton described three steps, including Full Disk Access and a separate Messages permission, and disputed the explanation Muse reportedly gave Aten about reading notifications. These are competing accounts, not a forensic finding. The sources reviewed do not independently establish how Muse learned about the conversation, whether a macOS permission was bypassed, or whether the agent’s explanation accurately described what happened.
What does Meta say happens to Muse data?
- Advertising: Meta says Muse conversations and VM data are not shared with its ad systems. The company states: “Muse doesn’t share your conversations or the data in your Virtual Machine with Meta ad systems.” This is Meta’s statement, not an independent audit result. Meta’s Muse security post
- AI training: Meta says sanitized trajectories—including conversations, tool calls, and subagent handoffs—may be used to train model checkpoints unless a user opts out in Muse settings. This is distinct from the ad-use claim.
- Employee access: Meta says operational policies restrict employee access, but do not technically prevent access when needed to support, secure, or operate the service. Policy limits and technical barriers are not the same protection.
- Information leaving the VM: Meta says limited data leaves for inference and telemetry. The reviewed security post does not establish that all processing stays inside the VM.
Is Muse Confidential VM available now?
Meta described Muse Confidential VM as a planned capability intended to cryptographically prevent Meta from accessing VM data, with a launch planned later in 2026. The reviewed post presents it as forthcoming, not as a generally available protection. Do not treat the planned feature as a current guarantee unless Meta confirms its availability and scope. Who could use Muse at launch?
The Associated Press reported that Muse was available at launch only in the United States and to people aged 18 or older. That describes launch-period availability on September 8, 2026, not a guarantee about current geographic or age eligibility. Associated Press launch coverage
What should users check before connecting an account?
- Review which connectors are enabled and what permissions each one requests; a connector’s access is separate from general use of Muse.
- Check Muse settings for the training opt-out if you do not want eligible sanitized interaction trajectories used to train model checkpoints.
- Consider what personal details about other people you put into Muse, including through files or connected apps. Its memory is designed to make those details useful later.
- Distinguish Meta’s stated policies from technical controls: Meta says employee access is restricted by policy, while the planned Confidential VM is the feature it described as intended to block Meta’s access cryptographically.
Meta acknowledges that “Like any AI system, Muse will sometimes make mistakes.” In the reported Messages incident, that warning is not evidence of the technical cause; the cause remains disputed in the available accounts. Meta’s Muse security post
