Neither Meta AI nor ChatGPT has one blanket level of access to your phone. What an AI feature can use depends on whether you granted an operating-system permission, chose to share content in a conversation, or connected an outside account. Those are separate kinds of access, with separate controls.
Three kinds of access to keep separate
Phone permissions
An app may need an iOS or Android permission for a specific feature, such as using the microphone for a voice prompt. Granting that permission does not, by itself, give the app access to all your files, messages, or accounts.
Content you send to an AI
When you send a prompt, photo, file, or voice message to an AI feature, you are sharing that content for the feature to process. This is different from an AI reading private messages or files that you have not submitted.
Connected accounts
A connected service can provide access to information under the authorization you gave its provider and the permissions already attached to that account. Connecting one account does not automatically connect every account on your phone.

What ChatGPT can access
OpenAI says access through a connected app depends on the app, the access granted during provider authorization, permissions on the connected account, and any applicable workspace settings. ChatGPT’s app-permission settings control when it asks before using access that is already available; they do not connect an account or grant new provider access. To stop future access through a particular connection, disconnect that account in ChatGPT settings. OpenAI’s connected-app guidance describes these controls.
Keep connected-app settings distinct from ChatGPT’s general data controls. OpenAI’s Data controls guidance says you can turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in ChatGPT settings. When it is off, new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models, but may still appear in chat history. For signed-in users, the setting applies across devices. It does not disconnect connected apps or delete conversations.

What Meta AI can access in WhatsApp
WhatsApp’s Help Center says: “Meta AI won’t access your files or photos unless you choose to send them to use this feature.” Prompts and messages you share with Meta AI are received by Meta to provide responses and improve AI quality. WhatsApp says AI chats and sent files can be deleted. See “How to ask Meta AI about files”.

You take an action to start an AI conversation in WhatsApp, such as opening an AI chat or sending a message. WhatsApp also says that talking to an AI provided by Meta does not link your personal WhatsApp account information on Facebook, Instagram, or other Meta apps. That statement is specific to the WhatsApp Help Center; it should not be treated as a general description of every relationship between Meta services. Voice prompts and microphone permission
For WhatsApp Meta AI voice prompts, WhatsApp says it will request microphone permission if you have not already granted it. Meta’s Privacy Center says it does not use the microphone without permission and, even with permission, uses it only while you are actively using a feature that needs it; a Meta AI voice chat is one example. This does not establish a complete permission list for every Meta app or every current iOS and Android version. The available official information also does not fully specify what Meta AI can access from each surface in Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.

Meta AI across social apps
Meta lists Meta AI on its website and app, and within WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook, with text, image, and voice capabilities. Availability and features can vary by app, account, country, and current version. The listing does not, on its own, establish that Meta AI can read all information in the surrounding social app or on your phone. Check the current feature and permission details in the app you use. Meta AI’s product page lists its available surfaces.

- Phone settings: Review the permissions granted to the app, especially microphone access if you use voice features. Changing a phone permission affects that permission; it does not disconnect a connected account.
- ChatGPT settings: Review connected apps and disconnect any account whose future access you want to stop. Separately review Data controls if you want to change whether new conversations may be used for model training.
- Provider authorization: Remember that a connected service’s provider authorization and account permissions are separate from ChatGPT’s prompts about using access it already has.
- WhatsApp Meta AI: Do not send a file, photo, prompt, or voice message to Meta AI unless you intend to share it for that feature. WhatsApp says AI chats and sent files can be deleted.
