Retreating Swiss glaciers and permanent snowfields have exposed prehistoric equipment, a Bronze Age bow and arrowheads, and early-sixteenth-century human remains. These finds can preserve rare evidence of Alpine life, but they may deteriorate quickly once exposed. If you spot a possible artifact, do not touch it: document it from a safe distance and report it to the archaeological authority responsible for that canton.
What have melting Swiss glaciers uncovered?
Archaeological finds have emerged from high Alpine glaciers, ice fields and permanent snow patches. Ice can preserve organic materials that are scarce in other archaeological contexts, so a retreating glacier may expose evidence that would otherwise have been lost. But discovery does not automatically explain what an object was used for or why it was there.
| Site | Date or period stated by the source | Reported material | What is known—and what remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schnidejoch, Valais | Third millennium BCE | Equipment | The Valais Cantonal Office of Archaeology identifies it as an emblematic discovery. The cited account does not specify the use of each item. |
| Lötschen Pass, between Bern and Valais | Bronze Age | A bow and several arrowheads | The weapon’s possible purpose—and whether it related to hunting, protecting livestock or conflict—remains a question, not an established conclusion. |
| Theodul Pass, Valais | Beginning of the sixteenth century | Remains described by the Valais office as those of a “mercenary” | The office identifies the remains as a notable find; the cited material does not establish further circumstances. |
A Swissinfo report also mentions an ancient cow’s skull, a small Roman statue and a rosary among finds associated with glacier archaeology. It does not provide individual dates or interpretations for those objects, so they should not be assigned a more precise story on that basis.

Cold, icy conditions can preserve organic materials that would be less likely to survive in ordinary soil. Objects and remains can therefore offer evidence about people and activity in Alpine environments across very different periods. A preserved object is evidence of human presence or activity, but its precise purpose, owner or route may remain unknown without further analysis.

After assembly, pull the metal lock button until it pops out to lock the pole in place. If the pole feels loose, re-seat the button until fully engaged - it is not a defect. Designed to fit men, women, and teens 5'2" to 6'5" (159-195 cm). Includes 1 pair of trekking poles and a carry bag.
- Lighter Than Your Average Umbrella: Each pole weighs only 11.5 oz (330g), light enough for all-day hiking, backpacking in high mountains, or ski trail use. Built with aircraft-grade aluminum alloy for the strength-to-weight ratio you need on demanding trails. Whether you enjoy fishing, hiking, trekking, or everyday walking, these collapsible poles deliver the support you need.
Once exposed to air, sun and changing weather, fragile organic material can deteriorate rapidly. That makes a find’s location and condition important: removing or handling it can damage evidence before specialists have documented it.
How do archaeologists recover and study glacier finds?
Fieldwork is active search and careful recovery, not simply waiting for melting ice to reveal an object. Swissinfo’s 2 October 2026 report describes glacier archaeologist Marcel Cornelissen and his team documenting finds, stabilizing them, preparing them for transport, then arranging laboratory analysis and dating. The report says most artifacts are found lying on glacier surfaces rather than buried beneath the ice.

Mountaineers may alert the archaeologist after spotting an object. The team’s documentation and stabilization help preserve information and material that could otherwise be lost after exposure. Laboratory analysis and dating can add evidence, but not every object’s date or use is established in the accounts cited here.
What should you do if you find something on a glacier?
The Valais Cantonal Office of Archaeology provides the following guidance for discoveries in Valais. Do not approach an unsafe location; conditions and terrain take priority. The office’s instructions are canton-specific. If the find is elsewhere in Switzerland, contact and follow the current procedures of the responsible cantonal authority.

- Do not touch or move the object. The Valais office warns that remains in this context are especially fragile.
- Photograph it in its surroundings, if terrain permits. The office recommends taking this wider photograph from 50–100 metres away.
- Take a detail photograph with a scale. An ice axe, Swiss Army knife or lighter can provide a reference scale without handling the find.
- Record the location. Note a GPS point or mark the spot on a topographic map.
- Mark the location nearby if it is safe. The office suggests a cairn or stake.
- Report the discovery immediately. In Valais, use the Cantonal Office of Archaeology’s app or forms. The office identifies IceWatcher as an app for documenting glacial discoveries and quickly informing its archaeological office; check with the office for current availability and reporting options.
The Valais office states that movable archaeological objects are state property. Do not collect a find or put yourself at risk to document it.
What do these discoveries tell us about people crossing the Alps?
Finds from high passes show that people and objects were present in Alpine settings over millennia. Equipment from Schnidejoch, the weapon from Lötschen Pass and the remains from Theodul Pass belong to distinct sites and periods; they should not be collapsed into one account of a single route or purpose. In particular, the bow and arrowheads do not by themselves establish whether their owner was hunting, guarding livestock or involved in conflict.

As glacier archaeologist Marcel Cornelissen put it, “A great deal of archaeological knowledge is being lost.” The rapid exposure and deterioration of finds make timely reporting valuable, while careful interpretation depends on documented evidence rather than assumptions about an object’s story.

Swiss glacier monitoring reported a sharp loss of ice in 2026, but those measurements describe glacier change—not the number or frequency of archaeological discoveries. On 1 October 2026, the University of Zurich Department of Geography reported results from GLAMOS and the Swiss Commission for Cryosphere Observation: Swiss glaciers lost more than 5% of their ice in 2026, and glacier volume fell by almost 20% over the preceding five years. The report attributed the 2026 losses to low winter snowfall and heatwaves from May to September.

The same report said individual glaciers’ mean thickness fell by 2.5–4 metres, with losses of up to 10 metres on some glacier tongues, and that glaciers lost about 2,200 billion litres of water between July and September. It described 2026 as just behind the 2022 record melt year overall, although some named glaciers experienced their greatest melt on record. Lower Saharan dust deposition in 2026 allowed more sunlight to be reflected than in 2022 despite higher temperatures. These are dated monitoring results, not lasting annual rates.
Where to see glacier archaeology in Switzerland
Lucerne’s Glacier Garden hosts the reported “Ice Treasure Trove” exhibition, which connects glacier archaeology with ice-core research. A report gives the exhibition’s end date as 22 August 2027; check the venue’s current schedule before planning a visit.
